An Ordinance Relating to the Fire and
P ®lice Commissioner
BE IT ORDAINED by the President and Board of Trustees of the
Village of Deerfield that:
Section'l. ..Creation.) There shall be a Board of Fire End Police
Commissioners as provided by law, which shall consist of three members /
whose term shall be for three years. Such members shall be appointed by
the President, with the consent of the Village Board of Trustees. Of the
three members of the Board, one shall be a member of the employee class,
one from the employing class, and the third shall be a representative
citizen not identified with either the employee or employing class, as
provided by "statute: Provided that of the members first appointed, one
shall serve until the end of the current municipal year; one to the end
of the next following municipal year and the third until the end of the
ensuing municipal year. -
Section 2. Duties.) The Board of Fire and Police Gommissioners
shall have charge of all appointments to and dismissals from the Police
Department and shall conduct and hold all entrance and pormotional
examinations in the manner required by law.
Section 3. Chief.) The Chief of Police shall be appointed by the
President and Board of Trustees; provided that if any policeman having a
status on the Police Department under The Fire and Police Commissioners
Act is appointed Acting Chief, he may retain such status while acting as
Chief; and provided further that if the present Chief of Police should
cease to be Chief of Police he shall thereupon revert back to and hold the
position and rank of Police Lieutenant of Police, which position he held
prior to his appointment as Chief and for more than one year prior to the
time Article 14 of the Cities and Villages Act became effectiveoin Deer-
field.
Section 4. Removal or Discharges.) No member of the Police
Department who has been a member for one year prior to July 1, 19579
or who is appointed by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners after
a
an examination as provided in this Article, shall be removed or dis-
charged or suspended without pay excepting by the said Board after a
hearing on written charges as provided by law.
