10/01/2001October 1, 2001 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Deerfield was called to order by Mayor Harris in the Council Chamber of the Village Hall on Monday, October 1, 2001 at 7:33 P.M. The Clerk called the roll and announced that the following were: Present: Steve Harris, Mayor Jerry Kayne Derek Ragona William Seiden Vernon Swanson Matthew Wylie. Absent Harrief Rosenthal and that a quorum was present and in attendance. Also present were Village Attorney Peter Coblentz and Village Manager Robert Franz. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Trustee Ragona made a motion to approve the minutes of the September 19th Board of Trustees meeting. Trustee Kayne seconded the motion. The motion to approve the minutes.. passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENT Mayor Harris stated that certain comments made at the last Village Board meeting regarding the Pledge of Allegiance were taken out of context. He noted that the original request for adding the pledge to the Village Board agenda was via an anonymous letter and, therefore, the Village could not respond. He emphasized that our not pledging allegiance at Board meetings should not be interpreted as any lack of respect whatsoever. Elected officials volunteer their time on behalf of the community and, by participating in this democratic process, clearly demonstrate their patriotism. Because Trustee Rosenthal is out of town, the issue is being held over to the October 8th Committee of the Whole meeting. John Kessler, representing the Deerfield American Legion, noted that the legion has a meeting that night. In response, Mayor Harris stated that the pledge discussion will be first on the agenda so that legion members can get to their meeting. ORDINANCE APPROVING TEXT The Board held first reading on an ordinance approving a AMENDMENT TO ALLOW WALL SIGN wall sign for the Christian Beginnings Pre - School and Child FOR FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Care Facility at 824 Waukegan Road. ORDINANCE RE: ANNEXATION Two ordinances relating to the annexation of 1425 Carol OF 1425 CAROL. LANF. Lane were held over once again because the petitioner had not yet secured a Plat of Annexation. PERMANENT CLOSURE OF Mayor Harris announced that, because Trustee Rosenthal NORTHERN ACCESS TO was absent, 'the permanent closure of the northern access to COROMANDEL Coromandel would be held over for discussion at the Committee of the Whole meeting on October 8th. 1 1 1 COMMITTEE OF THE Trustee Ragona asked that the Open Meetings Act: Process WHOLE AGENDA and Procedures be added to the agenda of the October 8th Committee of the Whole meeting. UNITY RALLY The manager reported that Deerfield resident Beth Goldberg was organizing a unity. rally at Jewett Park at 1 P.M., Sunday, October 14th.
