08/20/1956143 August 20, 1956 The adjourned meeting of the President and Board of Trustees of the Village.of Deerfield was called to order by the President in the Council Chambers of the Village Hall on Monday, August 20, 1956 at 5:00 P.M. the Clerk called the roll and reported the following were Present: John D. Schneider, President Joseph W. Brown Hubert N. Kelley Raymond T• Meyer Maurice C. retesch Absent: Martha White Clark Carl J. Jaeger and that a quorum was present and in attendance at the meeting. Harold Peterson, Chairman of the Deerfield Safety Council, discussed the Chicago Motor Club survey, and the Safety Council recommendation that three additional crossing guards be employed to protect the Railroad crossings at Hazel Avenue and Osterman Avenue, and the Waukegan Road - Osterman Avenue intersection. Trustee Kelley, in an excellent speech, pointed out the need for parent responsibility in child safety. Trustee Jaeger entered the meeting and was present thereafter. Authorize Em loymment Trustee Kelley moved, seconded by Trustee 3 Additional Urossing Guards Petesch, that the Board approve the recommendation of the Safety Council, and authorize the employ- ment of three additional crossing guards. Adopted by the following vote: ..Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) Authorize School Traffic Light Trustee Brown moved, seconded by Trustee Jaeger, Waukegan and Osterman that application be made to the State Highway Department to permit the igstallation of a school crossing traffic light at Waukegan Road and Osterman Avenue, Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) Mr. Peterson, Mr. Evans and others in the audience expressed their appreciation for the action taken by the Board in providing additional pro- tection for Deerfield children. Ordinance - Road and Trustee Brown moved, seconded by Trustee Jaeger, Bridge Levy that an ordinance levying taxes for Street and Bridge purposes be re- passed by the Board, three - fourths of the Trustees being present. Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays : ' None ( 0) Ordinance Vacating Alley Trustee Kelley moved, seconded by Trustee Petesch, between Journal & Springfield that an ordinance be adopted vacating the alley running south from Hazel Avenue to Jewett Park between Journal Place and Springfield Avenue, the Deerfield Park District having approved this vacation. Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) 144 Safety Council Appointments President Schneider made the following appoint- ments to the Safety Council: Harold L. Peterson Alvah Schuck Lois Varick Harold Murtfeldt Norbert Dompke Harold Giss Catherine Price Elizabeth Petesch Chamber of Commerce Holy Cross Mothers' Club Wilmot School PTA Deerfield Grammar School PTA Northeast Section Northwest Section Woodland Park Southwest Section Trustee Petesch moved, seconded by Trustee Brown, that the appointments be approved. Carried unanimously. President Schneider asked the Safety Council to suggest names to fill the vacancy from the Southeast section. Authorize Purchase - Trustee Petesch moved, seconded by Trustee Police Utility Car Meyer,,that a Ford Police Utility car be purchased from Holmes Motor Company at a cost of $1,935.41. Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) Authorize Purchase - Trustee Petesch moved, seconded by Trustee 5 Safety Tires Kelley, that five (5) safety tires be purchased for the new police untility car. Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) Authorize Purchase - Radio Trustee Petesch moved, seconded by Trustee and Speaker Meyer, that a radio and speaker be purchased for the new polic utility car at a cost of approximately $700, as decided upon by the Chairman of the Police Committee and the Village Mara ger. Adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Brown, Jaeger, Kelley, Meyer, Petesch (5) Nays: None (0) Mrs. Willard Loarie stated there was a possibility that the proposed Toll Road would cont continue through'Lake County to the State Line. She requested the Board to go on record with the Toll Road Commission as opposing the extension of the Toll Road into Lake County, and that the improvement of Skokie Highway be undertaken. Trustee Brown moved, seconded by Trustee Petesch, that a letter be written to the Toll Road Commission opposing the extension of the Toll Road into Lake County, if investigation shows that it is now planned to connect the Toll Rodd with Skokie Highway at Rondout. Carried unanimously. There being no further business to come before the meeting, on motion by Trustee Bryan, seconded by Trustee Jaeger, the meeting was a4journed.
