06/21/2010Page 1 of 1 1/19/10 MINUTES COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE June 21, 2010 The Village Board met in the Board Room of the Village Hall at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, June 21, 2010. In attendance were: Village Board Staff Harriet Rosenthal, Mayor Kent Street, Village Manager Robert Benton, Trustee Peter Coblentz, Village Attorney Thomas Jester, Trustee Robert Fialkowski, Director of Finance Mary Oppenheim, Trustee Jenny Maltas, Asst. to the Manager William Seiden, Trustee Barbara Struthers, Trustee Absent: Alan Farkas, Trustee Deerfield Public Library – Facility Improvement Initiative Update Mr. Ken Abosch, President of the Deerfield Public Library Board of Directors, provided a power-point update report concerning the Library facility at 920 Waukegan Road. The information reviewed included a detailed listing of challenges to library services for Deerfield residents; a summary description of four service improvement alternatives; an estimate of the cost of the four improvement alternatives; the process used to seek community input and the community input received to date about the four improvement alternatives; financial guidance on the options and independent confirmation of project costs; rationale for the selection of the preferred alternative (Basic Infrastructure plus Moderate Expansion); benefits of the preferred alternative; and, next steps to complete community outreach and determine a course of action. Trustee Oppenheim noted that should a November referendum be needed, a significant amount of community education would be needed and much good ground work has been done already. The remainder of the Trustees agreed. Mayor Rosenthal thanked President Abosch and the other Library Board members and staff present for their thoughtful approach to the matter and keeping the Village Board advised of their efforts in this regard. The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m. following unanimous approval of the motion to adjourn made by Trustee Seiden and a second by Trustee Oppenheim.
