CITIZENS HONORED
At this year's Thanksgiving Interfaith Service, Doug
Bruss, Carl Berg and Paul Zavagno were presented
with the 2003 Human Relations Award. They are the
"Three Guys and a Truck" who sponsored a food drive
to benefit the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry.
We extend our sincere congratulations to these
residents who gave so much of their time to help
others.
HOLIDAY TREES/DECORATIONS PICK-UP
The village's scavenger service contractor will pick up
Christmas trees and other organic holiday decorations
between Monday, January 5th and Tuesday, January
13th on your normal yard waste days. Trees and other
organic greenery will be picked up at your curb IF all
bags, metal (including tinsel) and other decorations are
removed.
SHOP & DINE LOCALL Y
Several new businesses are now open in Deerfield:
➢ Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches in the Lake
Cook Road Metra Station
➢ Kid Snips in Prime Source Center
➢ LA Weight Loss in Deerbrook Mall
➢ Baja Fresh, T-Mobile, and Vitamin Shoppe in the
new outlot building at Deerbrook Mall
Soon to open is Rhapsody Cafe, which is occupying
the space vacated by Sage Hen at the southwest corner
of Deerfield Road and Robert York Avenue.
Remember! Retail dollars spent in Deerfield result in
sales tax to the community.
SNOW REMOVAL
It's a matter of pride with the public works department
to reach their goal of clearing all 70 miles of village
streets within 12 hours after the snowfall stops.
However, in order for them to do this, they need your
cooperation. Please:
➢ Don't park on the street or in public parking
lots after a 2" or more snowfall.
➢ When you shovel your driveway, put the snow
on the right side of your drive as. you face the
street... then the plows won't push as much
snow back into your driveway.
➢ Don't shovel or blow snow into the street.
➢ Be sure that, if a contractor plows your
driveway, the snow is stored on your property,
not in your neighbor's yard.
➢ Don't place objects such as trash cans and
recycling bins so close to the roadway that
they will be impacted by the plows.
➢ Maintain a safe distance (100') when traveling
behind a snowplow.
➢ Adopt a fire hydrant near your home and keep
it visible and accessible for the fire
department.
BOARD MEETING DATES
Due to holidays on January 19'h (Martin Luther King

board meeting in January will be on Tuesday, January

CENTENNIAL SCULPTURE
the building of the statue will be well
participate in community presentations.
Artist: Mary Block
Selected by: Deerfield -Fine Arts Commission
Commissioned by: Village of Deerfield
To commemorate the 100 years of incorporation as a municipality, the mayor
and board of trustees commissioned a piece of artwork to recognize this
milestone. The selected artwork is a sculpture that will be located on the
front lawn of the village hall.
The design includes two twelve -foot tall pieces made out of concrete
depicting a "family" theme, which is the heart of Deerfield. One piece
shows a male figure hugging a child. The child has its arms around the male.
The female piece is holding a baby and a child's hand. The child is to the
side of the mother and is holding a doll. The pieces will maintain a graceful
column feel through interspersed three-dimensional elements and will lean in
toward each other.
To create a history of the project and bring about community involvement,
documented by photos and digital recordings. In addition, the artist will
A model of the sculpture is on display at the village hall.
The piece will be completed in Fall 2004.
PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

01
The pedestrian bridge over Deerfield Road at the viaduct is scheduled for reconstruction this spring. Its overall
appearance will be improved and it will be safer for all users. A ramp will be added to the south improving
accessibility for the handicapped. 04
This summer, Deerfield Road will be reconstructed from the viaduct to Castlewood Lane. Both projects will impact
traffic. More details on these capital projects will be in the next issue of D-Tales.

FACADE IMPROVEMENTS
The Village Center Development Commission's efforts
to encourage downtown businesses to improve the
appearance of their properties are paying dividends.
Five merchants have applied for funding under the
village's facade rebate program. Some work is already
underway, but it is hoped that several buildings will be
renovated before the program expires in 2005.

commission will also discuss the downtown section of
the plan at meetings scheduled on January 14th and
February P. It is expected that a public hearing will
be held on the entire document in the spring. The
actual date will be announced in a later issue of D-
Tales.
