October 2001 - VOL. 23 NO.6
ANNUAL LEAF PICK-UP PROGRAM
Begins: October 22"d Ends: November 15th
Four Pickups: Public Works will make one pass by your house each week. Leaves should be ready for pick up
the night before your scheduled day (see map).
IMPORTANT CHANGES: Vacuum hose machines will be used on all routes. Please do not put the leaves in
the street. Leaves should be raked to the parkway as close to the curb as possible, but not into the street. Leaves
should be piled in a long neat row that does not exceed 5' in width.
Reminders:
Don't park on the street the day of your pickup.
We cannot pick up leaves from the parkway
where cars block access.
❖ Materials other than leaves (sticks, rocks, mud,
• branches) clog and break equipment parts.
❖ Put out as many leaves each week as possible
so that the crews are not overloaded on the last
pick-up
❖ If a crew is able to start in an area before the
scheduled day, they will also return on the
proper day.
❖ Rainy weather may delay us, but we will pass
your house four times.
After your final pick-up date, all leaves must be
bagged for pick up by the scavenger on the regular
Monday and Tuesday yard waste collection days.
December I Ph & 12th are the last yard waste pick-
ups for this year because that's when the compost
site closes.

prevention activities.
LOOKING FOR PHOTOS
We need your help in securing pictures of former
Mayors of Deerfield. With the Village's centennial
around the corner (1903-2003), wouldn't it be a great
time to create a sense of history in our Hall. We have
had 20 Mayors over 100 years. With the help of
residents Larry Dondanville (great grandfather was 0
Mayor) and John Willman (grandfather was P
Mayor) thirteen photos have been obtained. Missing
are: Christian M. Willman (193741), Robert S.
Alexander (1945-49), Andrew G. Bradt (1949-53),
John D. Schneider (1953-57), G. Eldon Holmquist
(1957-59), David C. Whitney (1961-64) and Ira K.
Hearn, Jr. (1964-65). Those of you who have photos
or know how to get photos (maybe someone who has
moved out of town), please call Jean Spagnoli at the
Village Hall, 945-5000, ext. 183. Photos will be
returned.
PLAN COMMISSION

boards & commissions which advise the Mayor and Board •

within the Village. Using the Village's
Comprehensive Plan as a guideline, they weigh
the merits of development proposals and solicit

There are seven members, appointed for three
year overlapping terms. Meetings are held at
8:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Thursdays of

Halloween Safety Tips
DEERFIELD
TRICK - OR - TREAT
TIME:
Wednesday, October 31
3:30pm - 7:00pm.
. Halloween is a time kids
look forward to every year.
After all, what is Halloween
about anyway? Children
dressing up in their new
costumes, going from door to
door, collecting enormous
• amounts of candy.
Unfortunately, some kids
take Halloween and make it an
evening for acting up and they
don't take into consideration how
their behavior is affecting other
people and their property.
We hope to have a safe
and fun Halloween here in
Deerfield and by following some
safety ideas, we can accomplish
that.
U
Costumes
4 Be sure costumes chosen are
flame retardant to ensure your
child is safe if they should
accidentally come in contact with
a burning jack-o-lantern or other
fire hazard.
4Make sure costumes are the
proper fit to prevent falls.
-When deciding on your child's
costume, try utilizing face paint
or make-up instead of a mask. A
mask may obstruct your child's
vision while crossing streets or
going up and down steps.
4Use reflective strips or stickers
on your child's costume that will
make him/her visible to vehicles.
Other Halloween
Safety Tips:
If you are not going along
with them, know who your child
is going with and the route they
are taking when trick -or -treating.
@Remind the kids to only go
treating at neighbors homes.
@Remind the kids not to eat their
newly gained treasures until they
get home. A good way to get
them to follow this safety tip is to
give them a snack before starting
our for their treats. Take a close
look at all candy prior to letting
junior dig in.
@Have them bring along a
flashlight.
@If you will be distributing
candy, be sure to turn your porch
light on so the children will know
it's OK to approach your house.

They're baaaa-ck... with one of Deerfield's favorite special events — Halloween Hoopla 2001! The staff of the
Deerfield Park District and representatives from School District #109 PTOs have been working very hard planning for •
the popular October event and recruiting volunteers.
They will begin the Hoopla festivities on Friday night, October 19 from 7-9:00 p.m. when 6'b, 7`h and 8`h graders can
enjoy the annual Halloween Hoopla dance at Shepard Middle School. The cost is $4.00 at the door, and the event will
feature entertainment by DJ Bizar Entertainment. Refreshments will be for sale.
From 7-9:30 p.m. on Friday night, October 26, the traditional bonfire and haunted house will be featured. Wander
over to Jewett Park and scare yourself silly ($3.00 per person at the door). While you're there, you can also enjoy the
bonfire, refreshments and glow -in -the -dark promotional items for sale. The latter are sure to light up the night and put
you in the Halloween spirit.
On Saturday, October 27 from 3-6 p.m., come to Jewett Park and the community center for games, crafts, face
painting, balloon twisters, musical entertainment, a cakewalk, prizes and surprises. The Optimist Club will be selling
food, while Deerfield Senior Center members will handle ticket sales. The haunted house ($3.00) will be open from 6-
9 p.m. There will also be snacks, hot drinks and glow -in -the -dark promotional items on sale.
