YEAR END REMINDERS!!!
SCAVENGER Due to the holidays, garbage collection will be on Wednesday, December
SERVICE 26th; Saturday, December 29th; Wednesday, January 2nd and Saturday,
January 5th. These changes include recycling pickups which will be on'
Saturdays - December 29th and January 5th.
Special Collectionff Collection of organic decorations (Christmas trees,
garland, wreaths) will be on Saturday, January 5th and Friday, January 11th.
These will be the only dates for this type of material. Be sure to remove
any metal before placing these items at the curb.
RECYCLING Please be careful with the materials placed at the curb. There have
been complaints of newspapers blowing about neighborhoods. With
plastic milk cartons now recyclable, we realize that the bins are a
little crowded. The best alternative: put your newspapers in paper
bags and place them next to the bin.
DOG TAGS Your dogs 1990 license is due on or before January 1st. Applications
have been mailed to all dog owners listed in our records. Bring or
send proof of rabies inoculation, the computerized form and the $5.00
fee. Don't be confused by the date of the rabies shot ... the license is
due January 1st. ,,# .

VILLAGE The Village Hall will close at noon on Monday, December 24th and reopen
HALL HOURS on Wednesday, December 26th. Our regular hours are 8:00 A.M. to 4:30
P.M., Monday thru Friday. Remember, there is a depository on the south
side of the building for dropping off bills at anytime.
SNOWPLOWING Parking is prohibited on Village streets and public parking lots after

Village streets.

IThe holidays are a special time of year - a time when busy
people forget to be careful about their property and personal "
safety. As a result people are especially vulnerable to
theft and other crimes. Remember these safety tips for a safer
more enjoyable holiday season. t

At Home
If you go away for the holidays, get an automatic timer for
several lights. Have a neighbor watch your house, shovel the
snow, pick up the mail and newspapers, and park his or her car
•in your driveway from time to time.
Don't display gifts where they can be seen from a window or,
doorway. Store gifts before you go away on a holiday trip.
Cut up appliance boxes rather than setting them out on the curb A
for garbage pick up.
Use only fire resistant ornaments on a Chistmas tree and make sure lights are in good working
order. Don't leave the lights on over night or when you are out. Have you tested your
smoke detector lately? .40

Shopping`
Don't display large amounts of cash. Keep track of purses, never leave them on counters
or in shopping carts.
Park your car in a well lighted parking lot. Lock your car and close the windows, even
if you are only leaving for a few minutes. Have your keys in hand when you return.
Package theives and pickpockets look for easy targets. Place your packages in the trunk
rather than inside your car in open view.

Chiid Restraints
Occasionally we come in contact with new residents, visiting grandparents, or relatives who
don't have a proper car seat or child restraint device. Our Patrolman's Association, the
Deerfield Optimist Club, and the Deerfield - Lincolnshire Rotary Club have purchased
�childrens car seats. The seats are for children from birth to 40 pounds. The police
department will lend these car seats on a limited basis to Deerfield residents. To
inquire about the program call the police department on the non emergency line 945-8636.

HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON
PLAZA DEDICATED
On October 13th, the Village held a Grand -Opening of the new Village Center
southwest corner of Deerfield and Waukegan Roads. Approximately 70 people
event and heard the following remarks by Mayor Bernard Forrest:

"I would like to welcome everyone this morning and thank you for attending this grand -
opening of our Village Plaza. Your attendance shows a sincere interest in the Village
Center and its future well-being, and the Village will do everything it can to continue
this commitment. It was in that vein that we appointed a Task Force in October, 1987
to design a Streetscape Plan for our entire downtown area. Although several other pro-
jects have been completed (namely the four Village Center entrance features, the pedes-
trian bridge at the viaduct and the commuter parking lot), this plaza is the centerpiece
of the overall plan. Its location at the crossroads of the Village will do much to en-
hance, not only the Village Center, but the entire community. As most of you know, the
Village acquired this corner in December of 1988 as part of an overall plan to reduce
traffic congestion, to improve the appearance of the Village Center, to encourage pedes-
trian traffic and to promote private interest in redevelopment. The primary importance of
acquiring this specific parcel was that it allowed for a right -turn lane as well as the
ideal location for a plaza which will serve as the focal point of our Streetscape Program.
All of the streetscape improvements have been funded through Tax Increment Financing and
represent only the beginning of a concerted effort to revitalize the downtown area. As
with most major goals, considerable time and patience will be needed to reach our objec-
tives. I can assure you, however, that both public and private improvements in the
Village Center will be given the highest priority. The Board of Trustees and staff join
me in inviting you to enjoy the plaza, not only today, but as often as the opportunity
presents itself. As a matter of fact, the pep rally for the recent homecoming game ended
here, where everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and perhaps started a new tradition.
This plaza is truly an asset which will benefit our community for many years."

She thanked Bob Gand for providing music at the grand -opening and Deerfield Bakery for
donating refreshments. Also, she acknowledged various people and groups which contributed
to the plaza: The Curley Family, Deerfield Women's Club, Sara Lee and Deerfield Federal
Savings & Loan. Finally, she asked for suggestions as to further uses of the plaza -
reminding everyone that this a community plaza which.should be enjoyed and used by all.
