IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN!!
Every year at this time, we try to think of some sensational article that will get your com-
plete attention - and, while we're getting better at this each year, there are still a lot of
you who don't follow through. Here's our best shot for 1984.....
In early November, be sure you remember
To purchase your sticker (the sooner the quicker!).
You shouldn't delay, for on New Year's Day
The cost will increase (and so will the Police!)
We could add another line: "We're not being funny, we're saving you money!" When you get
your computer forms in the mail, either mail them with your check, bring it in to the Village
all, or drop it in the depository on the south side of the building. If you've moved in
ecently or for some reason you don't get computer forms, let us know and we'll see that you
receive them (you may not be in the computer as yet).
EVERY vehicle must have a sticker displayed on or before January 1, 1984. This includes the
moped, the RV, that little sports car you only use on perfect days during the summer, and
the cars your college students have away at school, if they're registered in Deerfield.
Now if you forget to purchase and display the sticker by January 1st, you'll pay 50% addi-
tional, and you'll probably get a ticket for another $25.00. So, instead of the normal
charge of $25.00, you'll pay $37.50 per vehicle, plus another $25 for the ticket, or a
whopping $62.50!
DOGS must also have a new license by January 1st, regardless of when the rabies inoculation
is due. The fee for dogs is $5.00 and you must show us proof of the rabies inoculation in
order to get the license. If you mail the rabies certificate with your check and the com-
pleted form, we'll return it with the license.
CATS must have a rabies inoculation but do not need a Village license. All dogs and cats
have to have the Lake County rabies tag. These are $1.00 a year and can either be purchased
at the Village Hall or you can mail the forms to the Lake County Health Deprtment with your
check. Dogs get a total of three tags - the veterinarian's, ours and Lake County's - cats
only get two.
Your computerized forms will show the information you gave us for your 1983 cars and/or dogs.
If there are any changes, just make the changes in the shaded area of the form - otherwise,
all you need to do is write a check (we also accept cash) and get it back to us.
While you're thinking about dogs and cats, think about your neighbors! If your cat is stalk-
ing the birds in the neighborhood, or if your dog barks night and day, you need to have a
heart-to-heart talk with your pet! Be a good neighbor.
ENERGY ADVISORY COUNCIL
DRUG AWARENESS TOWN MEETING
The Energy Advisory Council is charged with
researching and developing a comprehensive
energy plan for the Village and to advise the
Mayor and Board of Trustees about all matters
pertaining to energy.
Christopher Strong is the Chairman of the EAC,
and the other members (who serve for 3 years)
are:

Milan Weber
There is a vacancy on this Commission so if you
are interested in saving energy and would like
to devote some of yours to the Village, give us
a call!
STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAYS
There will be a new look in Village government,
Park and School Districts on November 15th.....
that's the day elected student officials will
take over. At noon, they will have lunch with
their counterparts at McDonald's.
There will be tours for all other eighth grade
students during the afternoon of the 15th, and
morning and afternoon of the 16th.
The Village staff really looks forward to this
every year!
MEET TRUSTEE JIM MAROVITZ
James L. Marovitz was ap-
pointed as a Trustee in
September to fill an un-
expired term until May of
1985.
Jim and his wife, Gail,
have two sons - Andy, 19,
who's a Sophomore at Am-
herst College; and Scott,
a Junior at DHS. They've
lived in Deerfield for 16 years and the whole
family has been and is now active in the com-
munity. Jim is a partner in the law firm of
Sidley & Austin and is on several Boards of
Directors. He's also been active in the Deer-
field Baseball Association for the past 11
years (both as a Manager and an Umpire ... which
should come in handy in this new position!)
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE
TOO MUCH OF AN OLD TIMER
to remember the Ben Franklin and Mr. and Mrs.
Sweeney. Just in case... it was located in
the Shoppers Court where Shelby's is now.
On November 2nd and 9th, Public Television will
broadcast THE CHEMICAL PEOPLE, a two-part series
especially designed to bring concerned parents •
and citizens together and offer guidelines for
helping our young people. Hosted by First Lady
Nancy Reagan, this unprecedented effort has the
participation of over 25 national organizations
and over 200 local PBS stations all across the
country.
The Deerfield "Town Meetings" will be held at
Deerfield High School, on both the 2nd and 9th,
beginning at 7:30 P.M., to watch the program,
which offers hard information about the alcohol
and drug abuse problem. Following the broad-
cast, there will be a panel discussion with
community leaders, discussing the Deerfield
situation. Everyone will be invited to return
and watch program two, at which time a Deer-
field task force will be organized to work on
solutions to the problems.
You owe it to yourself and the young people of
Deerfield to participate in this precedent -
setting outreach program!

THIS AND THAT ...
And you thought Wilmot Road was going to be
torn up forever, didn't you? Now that it's
completed and back in service, the one problem
will be watching your speed! Even though the
surface is new, the speed limit remains at 30
(except in the school zone where it's 20). We
are running heavy radar on Wilmot.... so keep
it down!
Deerfield Road is finished except for the sig-
nals. Deerfield and Chestnut will be fully
signalized and then (after the light is done
at McDonalds/Cadwell Corners) the Deerfield/
Wilmot intersection will be signalized to in-
clude turning phases at'all legs.
You will probably experience low water pressure
while the elevated tank is being painted since
it will have to be drained so the inside can
be painted. This will only be temporary but
we thought we'd give you a little advance warn-
ing.
•
DECEMBER 4th• make a note of that date. It's
the date of the next Blood drive. You can make .
an appointment by calling 298-9660. It only
takes about 30 minutes to give a pint of blood
and it's a wonderful community service!

HOLIDAYS FOR THE SCAVENGER SERVICE
The Optimist International Foundation is spon-
soring an essay contest. The subject is "Free-
,"om, Our Most Precious Heritage." Every one of
ou should be able to turn out a masterpiece on
this subject! For details regarding the contest,

FIRE DAMAGE REPAIRED
All traces of the arson fire at the railroad
station last July llth have•been erased and the
building.is back in A-1 condition. Repairs (of
approximately $20,000) consisted of replacing
and reinforcing rafters, roof sections and the
support wall in the attic section, plus minor
interior work in the Western Union and baggage
portions -'of the building.

TRICK OR TREAT
Hallowe'en is officially on October 31st - and
!►ill always be celebrated on that evening in
Deerfield. In past years, Mayor Forrest has
tried to accommodate the parents, kids, schools,
Park District, Police ..... but changing Trick or
Treat night just doesn't work! So, it's the
31st.
There will not be any scavenger service on
Thanksgiving Day. This is a little premature
but - since Christmas falls on Sunday (as does
New Year's Day) - the Monday pick-up will be
their holiday. You'll receive double pick-up
on the Thursdays following these holidays.
ENERGY TIP
If you plan to buy a new gas heating system ask
the gas company about the savings potential of
electronic ignition, or find out about'retro-
fitting your present system.
Also, consider the advantages of a clock therm-
stat to turn your heat down automatically at
a regular hour before you retire and turn it
back up again before you wake. The cost is
somewhere in the $40 to $90 range and it might
be worth that to you for the convenience of
having•the temperature regulated automatically.
TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE ...
That's what some of those marvelous repair
con men's prices are! Most repair firms are
honest and reliable ... but there are exceptions!
Watch out for the following:
1. Unsolicited phone calls offering rock
bottom prices for furnace cleaning,
chimney sweeping... or similar services.
This can be a ploy to gain access to
your equipment so that other repairs can
be suggested.
2. Claims that unless the repairs are done
on the spot, it will result in more
serious damage or even illness to your
family.
3. Exorbitant charges, exceeding the initial
estimate.
KNOW WHO IS WORKING ON YOUR EQUIPMENT! Check
with the Police, your friends or neighbors be-
fore you hire anyone to make repairs.... don't
wait until after you've been taken!

HOE, HOE, HOEH!
We'll be plowing and discing the Hod the
week of October 31st. Letters have been sent
to the gardeners asking that all stakes, pipes,
strings, plastic.... whatever they've added to
the plots ..... be taken out by that date. When
the ground is ready, we'll put the stakes in
and •it will be ready for Spring planting. We
won't be plowing.again in the Spring.
WE'LL TAKE YOUR LEFTOVER LEAVES
After you've bagged as many leaves as possible, the scavenger service will take them away for
you. This is part of the service you're paying for so take advantage of it. This will also
help us when we make the one sweep down your street to get the remainder of the leaves.
The map below will show you what day we'll be going past ,your house. We won't be there before
this date, but we might be a day or two.later. Put your leaves on the •parkway near the street
but NOT IN THE STREET, just before the.date shown. If you miss us, you can still bag them for
the scavenger.
The success of the leaf program depends mostly on the weather. We can only pick them up until
the snow flies - after that, we are stopped. We also need the cooperation of the leaves - if
they don't fall, we can't very well pick them up! And, last but not least, we need your help.
PLEASE don't put your leaves in the street. They clog the sewers, they present an attractive
nuisance for children - and it's a violation of the Municipal Code.
