Mayor’s Message
Thank you, Deerfield! Thank you
for taking COVID-19 seriously.
Thank you for staying home. And thank
you for looking out for one another.
I know that our residents and businesses have a lot of
questions right now. We cannot predict the future, but in
this special issue of D-Tales, which went to press on May 7,
we will focus on the items under the Village’s control and
provide the answers we do have. First, I want you to know
that the Village is still operating to assist our residents and
businesses. If you call, we will answer, literally we will answer. Our staff is still answering
your calls from their homes. Our Police Department, Public Works and 9-1-1 Center
continue to serve.
Gov. Pritzker extended the stay at home order through May. This new order will allow
our retail businesses to open for curbside pickup and delivery.
In light of the Governor’s new face covering order, I issued a new supplemental order to
provide clarity on face coverings in the Village. Under my new order, anyone over two
years of age and able to medically tolerate a face covering is required to wear one when
in a public place or outdoors and unable to maintain a six-foot social distance. This
includes when patronizing an essential business, working in an essential business, taking
public transportation or a taxi/ride share, working in or visiting an indoor construction
site, performing professional landscape services, or when in the common areas inside of
multi-unit residential and non-residential buildings.
My sincere thanks to our first responders and our residents working in healthcare and
at our essential business. You are truly saving lives and for that we are most grateful.
Thank you to our business owners. You have sponsored community events, held
fundraisers for local clubs and non-profits and provided us all with quality service.
Residents can now return the favor and support you by purchasing gift cards, carrying
out, and buying local whether shopping on-line or picking up curbside.
Remember, social distancing does not mean social isolation. Please continue to
communicate with friends, family and neighbors. And please continue to stay at home
and only leave for essentials. Do it for you, do it for your family, do it for our essential
workers. #DoItForDeerfield.
Stay safe,
Harriet

Stay at Home Order
Extended
On Thursday, April 23, Governor
Pritzker announced plans to extend
the State’s Stay at Home Order. The
Order, which took effect on May 1
and continues through May 30, 2020,
incorporates several modifications
which will lessen some restrictions
while still actively managing the spread
of COVID-19 and the burden it places
on the healthcare system. A modified
Stay at Home Order is possible because
Illinoisans are successfully bending the
curve of infection through strict social
distancing measures.
Highlights of the modifications include:
• Face coverings required statewide
for individuals ages 2+, in public
when a distance of 6’ from others
cannot be maintained
• Greenhouses, garden centers,
nurseries and animal grooming
services considered essential
businesses
• Non-essential businesses may fulfill
telephone and on-line orders via
curbside pick-up and delivery
• Some elective surgeries may be
resumed, based on criteria
• State Parks will begin a phased
reopening
• Golf courses may open provided
operators, employees and golfers
follow strict safety measures
Our Police Officers are doing
everything they can to respond to calls
of groups congregating, but understand
calls often have to be prioritized. If
you want to report an infraction you
are witnessing, please call the non-
emergency number 847.945.8636. The
Police Department has the authority,
under the municipal and state statute,
to issue tickets for violations.

Special Events
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the
Village is looking closely at all special
events and observations to ensure the
health and safety of residents.
In light of social distancing concerns, the
Village has made the difficult decision to
reschedule Family Days. The annual festival
traditionally held on July 3 and 4, will be
held later in the year with fireworks and
many of the same community traditions
residents look forward to every year.
The Deerfield American Legion will not
hold its regular Memorial Day ceremonies
at Jewett Park and the Deerfield Cemetery.
At this time, no decisions have been made
regarding Harvest Fest, scheduled for
September 26.

Farmers Market
The Deerfield Farmers Market will open
as scheduled on June 13 with a focus on
health and safety. The State of Illinois has
specifically identified farmers markets as
“essential businesses.”
This year, the Farmers Market will move
away from its focus on “food, friends and fun”
to a market that is dedicated to providing a
safe, open-air shopping experience for local
residents. This will require the elimination of
all of our social and civic activities as well as
limiting the vendor roster.
Farmers Market volunteers and Village staff
are using guidelines provided by the Illinois
Farmers Market Association to develop
rules for vendors and patrons. The new rules
will space out vendors, limit the number of
patrons allowed in at one time, require face
coverings, provide increased sanitation,
and patrons will not be allowed to touch
the merchandise, among others. Patrons
are asked to limit one person per household
and dogs will not be allowed.

2020 Census
The 2020 Census
directly affects how
billions of dollars in
federal and state funding are allocated to
state and local governments. Simply put,
the more people counted, the more money
allocated. Every person not counted means
a loss of revenue for the next 10 years.
An accurate Census count is critical to
effective emergency management. Census
data informs funding allocations for
hospitals, clinics, and emergency services.
It also helps public health officials and first
responders identify at-risk populations and
resources needed to continue to provide
high-quality community services. Respond
to the Census today at my2020census.gov.

Construction Update
As part of the Village’s 2020 Street
Rehabilitation Project, sections of the
following streets will be resurfaced or
reconstructed this year: Knollwood Road,
Margate Terrace, Westgate Road, Dartmouth
Lane, Linden Avenue, and Hillside Avenue.
The project began this spring with work
on various streets and the remaining streets
will begin later this summer.
The Woodvale Avenue Project includes the
full reconstruction of Woodvale Avenue,
installation of new underground utilities, and
installation of new sidewalks. This project
began in early March and is currently in the
roadway reconstruction phase.
The Village is planning a resurfacing project
for this summer on Deerfield Road, west of
the Metra tracks to Wilmot Road, in early
June. The project is anticipated to take two
months to complete.
For more information regarding these projects,
please visit the Village website. e
Vehicle Stickers
Vehicle stickers must be displayed
by July 1 - $30 per passenger vehicle.
Residents may purchase vehicle stickers
on-line, through the mail or in the drop
box located in the median just south of
Village Hall on Jewett Park Drive.
When paying on-line, you will enter
your information from the vehicle
sticker application you received in
the mail. You may also register a new
vehicle and delete vehicles you no
longer own. After submitting payment
for your stickers, you will receive
them in the mail within 3-5 business
days. There is no additional charge
for paying on-line.
The Village will work with residents
whose financial situation has changed
as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
