green design of the new
wastewater reclamation
facility
Construction of the new Wastewater Recla-
mation Facility (WRF) is scheduled to begin
towards the end of this summer. The Village
of Deerfield Wastewater Reclamation Facility
will be a true pioneer in sustainable “green”
design and will be among the first of its kind
to apply for the U.S. Green Building Council’s
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED®) registration.
The WRF administration building is looking
to achieve LEED certification for energy use,
lighting, water and material use as well as
incorporating a variety of other sustainable
strategies. LEED certification of the facility
will be based on a number of green design
and construction features that positively
impact the plant itself and the broader com-
munity.
The project will include native prairie plant-
ings put into the acreage surrounding the
plant to attract and provide habitat for wild-
life that will minimize the need for mowing,
fertilizer and watering. Pervious pavement is
part of the plan to minimize stormwater dis-
charge. It absorbs rainfall and prevents excess
runoff into storm sewers.
The administration building will be served by
a geothermal heating and cooling system.
Additionally, the building will include other
energy efficiency initiatives such as LED
lighting and occupancy sensors.
By using less energy, LEED certified build-
ings save money, reduce greenhouse gas emis-
sions, and contribute to a healthier environ-
ment for residents, workers and the larger
community. The construction is anticipated
to be completed the beginning of 2012. e
47th Annual Deerfield
Family Days Celebration
Deerfield Family Days will again take place on
July 3rd and 4th. Join family and friends for a
holiday weekend filled with fun and
entertainment!

The gates will open at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday,
head on over to the festivities at Jewett Park
including a pancake breakfast, dog show and
a variety of games and rides. The parade starts
at noon. New this year is Gandfest which
features bands inspired and assisted by Bob
Gand. Gandfest Bands will play near the Jew-
ett Park shelter from 1-4 p.m. (For a full listing
of Family Days events, please turn to page 2 or

Deerfield Family Days is sponsored by the
Village of Deerfield and planned by an all
volunteer Family Days Committee. The pa-
rade is organized by the Deerfield Lions Club
and the 10k race is organized by Deerfield Ro-
tary. The hard work and dedication of all keeps
this annual event a staple of the Deerfield
community. Funding for Family Days comes
