The Village of Deerfield Wastewater Reclamation Facility will be a true pioneer in sustainable “green” design and will be among the first of its kind to apply for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) registration. The WRF administration building is looking to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. LEED certification of the facility will be based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the plant itself and the broader com- munity. The project will include native prairie plant- ings put into the acreage surrounding the plant to attract and provide habitat for wild- life that will minimize the need for mowing, fertilizer and watering. Pervious pavement is part of the plan to minimize stormwater dis- charge. It absorbs rainfall and prevents excess runoff into storm sewers. The administration building will be served by a geothermal heating and cooling system. Additionally, the building will include other energy efficiency initiatives such as LED lighting and occupancy sensors. By using less energy, LEED certified build- ings save money, reduce greenhouse gas emis- sions, and contribute to a healthier environ- ment for residents, workers and the larger community. The construction is anticipated to be completed the beginning of 2012. e 47th Annual Deerfield Family Days Celebration Deerfield Family Days will again take place on July 3rd and 4th.
