Deerfield Family Days -
July 3 and 4
The 45th Annual
Deerfield Family
Days festivities will
once again take
place on July 3rd
and 4th. The usual
spectacular
fireworks, excellent live entertainment,
exciting family activities and festive parade
will again delight Deerfield residents during
this two day community event.
Because of construction at Deerfield High
School this summer, the annual July 3rd
fireworks display will not take place there.
July 3rd Fireworks will now take place at
Brickyards Park, 375 Elm Street. Despite
its new venue, the July 3rd celebration will
still have all of the same attractions,
including live entertainment, food and
activities for the whole family. Also because
of the site change, admission fees for the
fireworks event have been waived.
July 4th events, including the parade and
other activities, will go on as usual in the
Village Center.
Deerfield Family Days is sponsored by the
Village of Deerfield and is planned by the
all volunteer Family Days Committee.
Their hard work and dedication keep this
annual event a staple of the Deerfield
community. Funding for Family Days
comes from the generous support of many
Deerfield residents and businesses.

Website Redesign
Underway
Early this spring, the Village Board approved
a contract with AmericanEagle.com to
completely redesign the Village’s website,
www.deerfield-il.org.Using comments from
residents and other website users, a staff
committee has been guiding
AmericanEagle.com in their efforts to remake
the website into a much more effective tool
for use by residents, businesses and visitors.
In addition to a much more user-friendly
design, other changes will improve access to
minutes and agendas for all Boards and
Commissions, a community calendar
function and the ability to sign up for
electronic news bulletins from the Village. In
addition to these changes, the web address
will also change. The new address will be
www.deerfield.il.us. This new address
standardizes a format now being utilized by
many communities.
Look for a postcard from the Village
announcing the new website later this
summer! As always, input from residents and
businesses is welcomed so that we can
continue to make the website an effective
communications tool.

Ongoing
Construction
While orange cones still cover
so many roadways, the Village
of Deerfield is rapidly closing in
on completing summer
construction within the Village
limits. Several projects still
upcoming for the remainder of
the year include:
Lift Station
Rehabilitation Projects
Lift stations are utility sites that
help pump sewage to our
wastewater reclamation facility.
These stations do something
very simple, yet vital - they help
make it possible to drain sinks
and flush toilets, invaluable to
the healthy day to day use of
both homes and businesses.
Several of the Village’s lift
stations are decades old and are
badly deteriorated. Some are
above ground, and some
completely buried
underground, many feet below
the surface. The rehabilitation
of several stations is scheduled
for this summer. These include:
The North Avenue Lift
Station rehabilitation project
will begin in September and is
expected to be completed in
late October or November. The
Tot Lot on North Avenue will
be closed during this project.
Nearby residents have been
informed of the construction
process, and staff will provide
regular updates on the progress
of this project.
The East Side Lift Station
Project will also commence
near the end of the year, with
completion occurring in Spring
2009. The Lift Station projects
are a valuable part of Deerfield’s
ongoing utility repair work and
are being completed ahead of
construction on a new
Wastewater Reclamation
Facility (WRF). The East Side
Lift station alone pumps a third
of the all the solid waste from
the Village to the WRF and is a
valuable piece of infrastructure.
High School Entrance
Improvements
The addition of a Waukegan
Road turn lane and Deerfield
High School exit lane are being
completed this year in
conjunction with the Village of
Bannockburn. Work began in
June, and should be
substantially completed prior to
the school opening in the fall.
Construction will also include
extending the existing sidewalk
towards the Deerfield corporate
limits.
Resurfacing Waukegan
Road North of Lake
Cook
The Village of Deerfield
received emergency funding
from IDOT to resurface
Waukegan Road just north of
Lake Cook Road. The project
will consist of resurfacing
Waukegan Road from Lake
Cook Road to approximately
the entrance to McDonalds.
Analysis of the roadway was
conducted in June for the entire
section of Waukegan Road
North of Lake Cook Road up to
the Deerfield/Bannockburn
boundary. The roadway
analysis will be used to support
IDOT as future road
improvements on Waukegan
Road are contemplated.
For more information, please call
847/317-7245.
Mosquito
Abatement
The Village has teamed with
Clarke Environmental
Mosquito Control to
administer our mosquito
abatement program.
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-
borne disease. Symptoms of the
disease initially are similar to
the flu. The majority of
individuals infected with the
disease will never know it. The
symptoms will be so mild that
they will go undetected. In
severe cases, the disease may
cause encephalitis, paralysis,
coma or death. Individuals with
compromised immune systems
and senior citizens are at the
greatest risk.
The Village’s integrated
approach includes mosquito
traps for monitoring numbers
of insects, prevention of larval
mosquito development in
stormwater catch basins, and
insect-eating fish used in
detention basins.
When the mosquito count
elevates, the Village will provide
adult mosquito control. This is
the most effective method for
controlling mosquitos and the
West Nile Virus once the insect
matures. Even with this
comprehensive program in
place, the cooperation of each
Deerfield resident is needed.
Protect yourself during daylight
hours, especially at sunrise and
just before and after sunset:
•Wear light colored, long
sleeved tops and long pants.
•Consider applying insect
repellent that contains DEET
with14% to 25% Diethylmeta-
toluamide to exposed skin
(Off® or Cutter® are common
brands).
Prevent mosquito breeding
around your home:
•Dispose of all standing water
in buckets, cans or any water
holding container outdoors.
•At least once a week empty
water from bird baths and
plant-pot drip trays.
•Keep roof gutters clean and
free of debris.
Having an outdoor party?
•Use a fogger or spray
insecticide on foliage near and
around the party site just
prior to the arrival of guests.
•Have insect repellent for
guests in a prominent place.
If you have questions about
Deerfield’s 2008 mosquito
abatement program at any time
during the season, please contact
the Clarke Mosquito Hotline at
800/942-2555.
Safety on The
Sidewalks
The summer months bring an
increase in pedestrian traffic on
our sidewalks. Motorists must
be watchful of children out of
school riding bikes or the
recreational jogger. Residents
are asked to please be mindful
of pedestrians by trimming
back their hedges and bushes
that are adjacent to sidewalks.
Trash bins and yard waste
should be placed on the
driveway apron to keep the
sidewalk as unobstructed as
possible. Cars parked over the
sidewalk or trash bins placed
there force pedestrians to walk
on the street and into traffic. Be
a good neighbor and keep your
sidewalks clear!

Tornado Sirens
The Deerfield Police
Department is responsible for
the activation of tornado sirens
used to alert the public to
severe weather that may include
tornadoes.
There are three sirens located
in Deerfield: at South Park
School, 1421 Hackberry; on
Kates Road and at Tony’s Subs,
1480 Waukegan Road. The
sirens are tested on the first
Tuesday of each month at
10:00 a.m.
The sirens may be activated if
the National Weather Service
issues a tornado warning; if
there is a sighting of a funnel
cloud in Deerfield or a
neighboring community by a
trained weather spotter; or
upon orders by appropriate
public safety personnel.
Upon activation of the sirens
you should seek proper shelter.
The National Weather Service
recommends the following:
•In a home or a building, move
to the basement. If there is no
basement, move to an
interior room without
windows such as a bathroom
or interior closet.
•Avoid places with wide-span
roofs such as auditoriums,
cafeterias, large hallways or
shopping malls.
•If in your car, get out of your
vehicle and seek shelter in a
nearby building. If there is no
building available, lie flat in a
ditch or low-lying area. Do
not seek shelter under a
bridge.
There is no all clear siren, so
please rely on your radio or
television for updates on a
weather situation.
accidental 9-1-1 dialing by
taking the following steps:
LOCK your keypad when the
phone is not in use; TURN
OFF the 9-1-1 auto-dial feature
(if your phone came with this
feature activated); DO NOT
program 9-1-1 into your speed
dial; 9-1-1 services are already
accessible by dialing three
simple digits. It is much more
difficult to accidentally dial
three digits in the proper
sequence than to simply bump
one button; and DO NOT give
old phones to children as toys.
Phones with no service can still
dial 9-1-1.
It is also common for our center
to receive 5 to 10 wireless 9-1-1
calls for every traffic accident in
the community. If you see an
accident and emergency
vehicles are already on the
scene, there is no need to call
9-1-1.
It is important to remember
that you should only call 9-1-1
when you need an "emergency
response" from police, fire or
emergency medical personnel.
If general information or non-
emergency assistance is needed,
dial the non-emergency
telephone number for the
Deerfield Police at 847/945-
8636. Non-emergency
telephone numbers for police,
fire, and utilities are also printed
on the front inside cover of
most telephone directories. For
questions about power outages,
call Commonwealth Edison at
1-800-EDISON-1.
If you have any questions, please
contact our Communications
Director, Mary Anne Glowacz at
847-945-8636 or via email at
mglowacz@deerfield-il.org.
Fireworks Safety
The 4th of July holiday is a time
for celebration. Although the
purchase of some types of
fireworks may be legal in some
neighboring states, they remain
illegal to use and even possess
in Illinois.
People tend to overlook the
obvious dangers involved with
using fireworks. Fireworks can
find their way into the hands of
children who can be burned,
blinded, and otherwise injured
from heat, fire, projectiles, and
explosions. Remember,
fireworks are gunpowder
explosives and are extremely
dangerous.
Deerfield ordinances prohibit
any person from using, selling,
delivering, exploding, and/or
possessing fireworks in the
Village. The term "fireworks”
includes such items as
firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-
80's, bottle rockets, and roman
candles. Sparklers are also
prohibited in Deerfield.
The laws in Illinois do not
change over the July 4 holiday
or for any other holiday. The
Deerfield Police Department
thoroughly investigates all
reports of illegal use of
fireworks in the Village. If
someone is found to be in
violation, the items in question
will be confiscated and the
person(s) involved will be
arrested and/or charged when
appropriate. This applies to
both adults and minors.
From time to time the Chief of
Police or his designee may
grant permission for special
events such as Deerfield Family
Days to discharge fireworks
within the Village under and
pursuant to conditions set by
the Chief of Police and Fire
Department. These public
events utilize professionals who
are aware of the dangers
associated with fireworks and
are able to take all appropriate
safety measures. Remember:
leave the fireworks for the
professionals!
Dialing 9-1-1
from your
Cellular Phone:
It is important to remember
that when you call 9-1-1 from
your wireless phone, the 9-1-1
center may not know where you
are. When calling, you must be
able to give them your location
before assistance can be
provided. Stay calm and answer
all questions. Do not hang up
until you are told to do so. If
you are disconnected, call back.
The 9-1-1 center may not have
your wireless phone number, so
they may not be able to call you
back.
It is important to understand
how your phone works after
making a 9-1-1 call. Typically,
after dialing 9-1-1, you must hit
the send button to connect the
call. Also, many phones lock
into Emergency Mode after
calling 9-1-1, and you may not
be able to make other calls
temporarily. You should know
how to unlock your phone.
Our 9-1-1 center receives
dozens of accidental cellular 9-
1-1 calls per day because cell
phone users inadvertently
bump or sit on their cellular key
pads. About 40 percent of our
wireless 9-1-1 calls are caused
by accidental dialing. Wireless
phone users can help to prevent

Eco Friendly Travel Guide
With summer vacations just around
the corner, many of us have already
been thinking about far away places.
If we’re not thinking about far away
places then, perhaps, we are thinking
about just getting away for a few relaxing days. Here are some
resources and tips you might want to consider to make your
travels a bit “greener” this year.
Green Lodging
This site identifies hotels that are committed to reducing
waste, conserving resources and reducing or eliminating the
use of chemicals. It includes everything from hotels to condos
and B&Bs. You will be surprised at the lodging options
available that are committed to an ecofriendly lifestyle and
policies, and you will learn that you do not always have to
sacrifice comfort and luxury in order to practice environmental
care.
www.greenhotels.com
Travel Planning
Orbitz features energy-efficient hotels that have earned an
“Energy Star” label. According to the EPA, buildings that have
earned the ENERGY STAR rating use nearly 40 percent less
energy than average buildings and emit 35 percent less carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere, offering a significantly smaller
carbon footprint, perfect for the eco-traveler. You can also
book hybrid car rentals, purchase carbon offsets for your travel
or learn more about volunteer and other eco vacation
opportunities. Expedia launched their “Going Green” store
that allows customers to browse for environmentally friendly
hotels, hybrid car rentals and carbon offsets.

50/50 Parkway
Tree Program
As it has for a number of years, the
Village will again offer residents a
program that encourages the
planting of parkway trees. The
50/50 Parkway Tree Program
divides the cost of new parkway
trees evenly between the Village
and individual homeowners.
If you are interested in
participating in this program,
please contact the Village at
847/945-5000 and ask that
information on the program be
sent to you. This packet includes
information on varieties of trees
available, as well as an order form.
Orders are taken during the
summer months, and the trees are
usually planted in mid-October. All
trees are balled in burlap,
guaranteed for one year and
planted by public works personnel
in the Village right-of-way. Once
planted, residents are asked to
water the tree to help ensure its
survival.
Utility Billing
