RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION
REGARDING MINIMUM DRINKING AGE
WHEREAS, there are 25,000 deaths annually on the Nation's highways
that are due to alcohol related accidents; and
WHEREAS, teenagers account for 25% of these deaths although they
constitute less than 8% of the total number of licensed drivers; and
WHEREAS, research has shown that, by raising the drinking age,
a state can dramatically reduce its alcohol related accident rate among
teenage drivers; and
WHEREAS, states that allow persons.under age twenty -one to drink
attract teenagers from bordering states - thereby increasing the potential
for highway accidents; and
WHEREAS, Federal legislation is needed to encourage a uniform
drinking age of twenty -one years:
NOW, THEREFORE, THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE
VILLAGE OF DEERFIELD, LAKE AND COOK COUNTIES, ILLINOIS, do hereby resolve
that:
SECTION The Village of Deerfield supports House
ONE Resolution 2441, introduced by Illinois
Congressman John E. Porter, that requires
states to raise the minimum drinking age to twenty -one as a prerequisite
for receiving Federal highway funds.
SECTION That this Resolution shall be forwarded to
TWO the Village of Deerfield's elected repre-
sentatives, urging their support of this
legislation.
RESOLVED: This 6th day of February, A.D. 1984.
