REMINDERS
SIDEWALK SALE
We're not even going to mention the JULY
FIRST deadline for purchasing and displaying
your new Village stickers. By this time,
everyone has undoubtedly done all of that..... !,
RIGHT???
In view of the fact that one out of five
residents usually forgets that the scavenger
service is a day later following the holidays,
we WILL remind you about the July 4th
holiday (pick-ups that week will be on
Wednesday and Saturday). Incidentally, that
"one out of five" is a made-up statistic but it
sounds pretty plausible.
You still have time to order a tree for your
parkway through the 50/50 program. Call us
at 945-5000 and we'll send you all of the
information and an order blank. Trees will be
planted in the Fall.
LET THE CLIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY!!!
Don't pick up the lawn clippings when
e/ you cut the grass. If you leave them
where they fall, they will go to work
for you. They shade your grass, help
hold the moisture where it's most
needed and let you get the job done a
lot quicker than if you bag the clippings. This
sounds so sensible.... better, quicker and cheaper!
WHILE WE'RE ON THE GRASS SUBJECT....
If you have a landscape service that mows your lawn
for you, could you have the lawn cut after 7:30
A.M.? That's the earliest this is permitted and you
can give your neighbor a break by postponing the
racket until later in the morning, if possible.
YOU BE THE JUDGE I\
There is a crying need for election judges! The next
election is November 8th and judges from both
political parties are needed. All you need to do is to
call the West Deerfield Township Office at 945-
8317 and they will welcome you with open arms!!!
You DO get paid for this service, which gives you
added incentive to call. They will assign you to your
own precinct if possible, or to a nearby one.
Mark your calendar so you don't miss the annual
Sidewalk Sale in the Deerfield Commons....
Thursday, July 21st, Friday, July 22nd and Saturday,
July 23rd. 0
Then on Saturday, August 6th (from 10.00 A.M. to
5:00 P.M.) be sure to check out the Craft Faire also
in the Commons.
ILLINOIS HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION PROGRAM
Illinois law currently provides taxpayers with three
homestead exemptions, the use of which will lower
the amount of property tax owed to the county
treasurer. The amounts and criteria for the
exemptions are as follows:
Homestead Limited Exemption - This exemption
will lower the equalized value of the property by
$3500. To qualify, you must own the property and
must have lived on the property prior to January 1
of the tax year.
Senior Homestead Exemption - If you are the owner
of a residential property, occupied it prior to
January 1 of the tax year, and turned 65 anytime
during the tax year, your equalized value will be
lowered by $2000. Application for this exemption
must be made at the West Deerfield Township 40
Assessor's Office. A copy of the deed will also be
required.
Homestead Improvement Exemption - If you make
an improvement or an addition to the home for
which we assess, the assessment increase due to that
alteration is kept off the tax rolls for 4 years. There
is a maximum of $10,000 of assessed value which can
be kept off the tax rolls for that period. The
Assessor's office will initiate this exemption
automatically. If you have any questions about these
exemptions, please call the West Deerfield Township
Assessor's Office at 945-3020 or visit the office at
858 Waukegan Road.
BOARD MEETINGS ON CABLE
See your Village government in action live on TV!
Meetings of the Deerfield Board of Trustees are
televised live on cable TV every first and third
Monday at 8:00 P.M. on Government Access Channel
3. The meetings are also rebroadcast on Wednesdays
at 8:00 P.M. on Cable Channel 7, and a videotape of
each meeting is available at the Deerfield Public
Library for free rental. Also, don't forget to watch 49
Cable Channel 3 on a regular basis for important

8. When riding your bike at night
a bicycle should have a front light
visible for at least 500 feet. True
or False?
How did you. do? The answers
are at the end of this article.
Bicycle riding is fun and good ex-
ercise. It is also an important re-
sponsibility. When you ride on a
street or road, you must follow all
the traffic safety laws and rules
that apply to vehicle drivers.
Knowing how to ride your bicycle
safely is your best protection
against becoming involved in an
accident. Because a bicycle rider
is less protected than the driver of
a car, the bicyclist is often seri-
ously hurt in an accident. Protect
yourself even further by wearing
an approved safety helmet. Bicycle
helmets are an essential element to
bicycle safety. Always strap on an
approved helmet before you ride.
A common place for accidents in
Deerfield is at four-way stop inter-
sections. Bicyclists should remem—
ber that traffic laws apply to them as
well. At a four-way stop intersec-
tion, the driver or bicycle rider who
arrives first at the intersection
should be the first one to go. After
making a complete stop, proceed
only when it is safe to do so.
When riding your bicycle on a side-
walk, you must yield the right of
way to pedestrians and give an audi-
ble signal before overtaking and
passing them.
Parental Responsibilities
Parents should be aware of the re-
sponsibilities they must assume
when their children ride or walk
near streets or highways. These re-
sponsibilities range all the way from
selection of proper equipment for
the child to seeing that the child
learns and obeys all the traffic laws.
For the safety of you, your child and
others, make bicycle safety one of
your priorities.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!
Quiz Answers: lc, 2F, 3b, 4b, 5F,
6b, 7c, 8T.
DELAY IN COMMUTER STATION
MOSQUITO HOTLINE
Contrary to previous plans, the new train station
south of Lake Cook Road will not open until next
year. METRA was unable to resolve pedestrian
safety issues that the Village Board felt were critical
to the operation of a temporary parking lot at that
location. However, a building permit has been
issued for METRA to begin work on the permanent
facility which will park 500 cars and open in 1995.
We will keep you informed of their progress.
PROTECT YOUR PET
We know you love your pet and that you're
concerned for its safety. But, do you ever allow that
pet to run loose? This could lead to a tragedy if
your pet should be run over by a car ..... and if he or
she runs into the traffic, there's not much doubt as
to who will get the worst of it.
DON'T FORGET TO SEPARATE YOUR WHITES
White goods, which are all appliances, furnaces and
water heaters, are picked up by Laidlaw as part of
the regular scavenger service. Just remove the doors
for safety reasons and put them out at the curb.
Laidlaw will pick them up, and the scrap metal will
be recycled and all the "bad stuff" will be
environmentally taken care of.
VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
Due to July 4th falling on Monday, the Village Board
meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 5th at 8 P.M.

Most of the Village is included in the Southlake
Mosquito Abatement District which contracts with
Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management for
spraying services.
Maybe you already know about that BUT do you
know that Clarke now has a toll free Hotline number
(1-800-942-2555) to get your comments, complaints
or questions? All calls will be logged and complaints
will be handled within 24 hours. If the call is in
regard to stagnant water in your yard or to a
standing water situation, this will be referred
immediately to a field inspector for appropriate
action.
Take advantage of this new service if you need help
with those pesky critters. Hmmm - wonder if the
field inspectors are known as the Swat Team?
