NEW STATE LAW
Effective July 1st, white goods (which includes all discarded refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, air
conditioners, humidifiers and other similar domestic and commercial appliances) can not be picked up as part of
the regular scavenger service. You must now make arrangements in advance - preferably for a Friday pick-
up. To do so, call LAIDLAW at 1-800-344-5600. Laidlaw is working with Appliance Pick -Up Service, which
either repairs and resells your old appliance or sells the metal for scrap after the chemicals have been removed.
BLOCK PARTIES
We encourage neighborhood block parties as a great
way to get together annually, particularly because it
helps new residents to get ai quainted with their
neighbors. If you're planning a block party, here's
all you need to do -call or stop in the Village Hall to
get the required form to fill out. We've changed the
form somewhat to simplify it for you. One of the
minor problems a block party causes is some slight
inconvenience for those who are blocked off by the
barricades at either end of the party site. We hope
that you will be patient if you find you're unable to
travel through that block - it's only for a few hours
usually, and it's easy to detour around that block.
For those of you holding the party, be sure you
barricade the street as required so that there is easy
access for emergency vehicles.

FORGET THE OLD BAG
Do yourself and your lawn a favor! Instead of
bagging your grass clippings, let them fall to the
ground and serve as fertilizer. It's less expensive,
easier on your back and recommended by our Energy
Advisory and Resource Recovery Commission.
SPRINKLING RESTRICTIONS
From now until September 15th, State imposed
sprinkling restrictions are in effect. No sprinkling is
permitted between noon and 6:00 P.M. on any day!
If you have an even numbered address you may
sprinkle between midnight and noon and 6:00 P.M.
and midnight on even numbered days. Odd
numbered addresses have the same restrictions.
There are NO restrictions on watering (or washing
your car) IF YOU USE A HAND-HELD HOSE.
Your flowers and grass can be watered without
restriction, provided you use the hose rather than put
those sprinklers out - and you can wash the car since
this is a job for the hose, NOT the sprinkler!

and Board of Trustees.

COMMUNITY CENTER RENOVATION
The Park District has begun remodeling work on the
Jewett Park Community Center. This has required
them to vacate the building and to temporarily set up
program registration in a mobile unit located next to
the field house. The Family Day Flower Show will
still be held on the lower level of the building, and
washrooms will be available for public use. They ask
your indulgence during this construction period.

z 4TH OF JULY i
If you are `planning on attending activities on the 3rd or 4th of July (times and events are
printed in D-tales), we would like to remind residents that parking is always at a premium.
To help alleviate parking problems we encourage people to walk or ride bicycles to
activities.
During the 4th of July parade we often encounter a great deal of congestion at the
intersection of Deerfield and Waukegan road by people watching the parade. The parade will
cover the length of Deerfield road from Deer Spring park to Waukegan road, North on Waukegan
road to Hazel, and then West on Hazel to Park avenue where it will disperse. Anywhere along
the parade route is a good seat.
As always we ask people to be patient with traffic and congestion and to exercise caution.
Pedestrians and bicycle riders only create confusion when crossing in the middle.of the block
or among parade participants, not to mention that it's dangerous.
9anreworks - Remember that it is against the law to possess firecrackers, skyrockets, roman
dles, or any other fireworks containing any explosive compound. Fireworks in
irresponsible hands can cause injury, fire or property damage. Someone in possession of
fireworks can be ticketed and receive a fine up to $500.

TREES — BUSHES — SHRUBS o
A quick 'reminder to property owners to trim back bushes, trees and other landscaping.
Overgrown landscaping may cause vision obstructions to motorists, bicyclists, skaters and
pedestrians. A large percentage of warm weather accidents involve vision obstructions as a
principle contributing factor.
HOTEL -MOTEL SAFETY
Are you going on vacation this summer? In many tourist locations criminals make a good
living off of unsuspecting tourists, and poor security precautions. Before you go on
vacation consider these safety reminders about the hotel or motel you are staying at.
• Does the hotel/motel have security?
• Are there telephones in the room? Can you dial out directly to the police, or do you have
to rely on someone else to make the telephone call for you?
• Are the exterior doors secured after hours? Is there control over people entering or
exiting the grounds?
ri
• Is management's primary attention given to a restaurant, meeting center, or the hotel?
• If the hotel offers a service for checking valuables ask for their liability and limits in
:*iting before using it.
• Locate the fire exits and plan the best way out in an emergency.
• Learn about your surroundings and current law enforcement concerns in the area. Are there
recent pick -pocket incidents, room burglaries etc.?
Think about crime prevention regardless of where you are, criminals dol

OH, NO THEY DON'T!!! 4
Beware of organizations purporting to represent
Deerfield's Police or Fire Departments in telephone
solicitations seeking donations! They will tell you
they're raising money for some worthy cause, such as
children's benefits. Maybe so, but they have NO
affiliation with either of our emergency departments.
ABOUT YOUR BUSHES --
More and more people are walking, jogging and/or
biking throughout the Village. How about trimming
those overhanging bushes along your sidewalk as a
courtesy? If you're one of the walkers or whatever,
you'll understand the need.

J.U.L.I.E. is an acronym for Joint Utility Location *****
Information for Excavators, and she knows where all
of the utilities are buried. Before you dig on your
property or on the parkway, you need to know what
JULIE knows because gas, electric, water and
telephone lines feed into every home. And
streetlight circuits or Cable TV may run
underground to and from your rear yard.
