THE OFFICIAL WORD ON PARKING AT THE TRAIN STATION!!!!
If you're a commuter who parks at the Milwaukee Road station in Deerfield, this message is
for you personally! We've put flyers on cars parked at the station, we put a sign on the
station door, we've put the message on cable television.... you could say we've been doing
our best to get your attention!
EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 1st, commuter parking fees were raised from 25t to 50Q per day. When
you park there, be SURE you put two quarters in the numbered slot which corresponds to the
number on the space where you've parked. The coin boxes are checked very carefully every .
*permit
day, and the fine for non-payment or not -enough -payment is $5.00.
parking fees have been increased. Effective April 1st, the fee for residents is
$35.00 for three months and, for non-residents, it's $45.00 for three months. Deerfield
residents have preference for these permits BUT .... there is a long, long waiting list."
Another change is that Lot #D (on Elm Street) is now designated for Deerfield residents
only, the same as Lot #C has been.
WHILE we're on the subject of parking - don't park in a handicapped parking space unless
you have either handicapped plates or a handicapped sticker (or lots of money you don't have
any use for!). The fine for parking illegally in a handicapped space is $50.00.
THANK YOU for the suggestions and comments ... we got 23

replies -(which is underwhelming) as
different comments. Since they were
all of those who signed their names.
For those of you who said you liked
DID YOU KNOW THAT.... Deerfield has only four blood drives a -year; and'if you gave a pint of
blood each time, it would only take three hours (not counting travel time) out of the 8,760
hours in the year. How much could travel time add to that? Won't you mark your calendar
for: MARCH 3rd, JUNE 2nd, SEPTEMBER 1st and DECEMBER 1st. You don't even need to make an
&ppointment - just show up at the Community Center between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and noon.
If you'd feel more comfortable having a definite appointment, call Patti Moore, 948-1365.
Whether you say "150 is nifty" or "Let's Sesqui-brate",,you'll be
sesQulc°ErEireNri°venR== talking about Deerfield's Sesquicentennial birthday, being celebrat-
_ Isis 1965,,; ed throughout 1985. Just announced is the opening event! The
Sesqui-Committee has planned an old-fashioned "Sociable" to be heAh
from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M., Sunday, March 17th, at Jewett Park Commun
Center, 836 Petersen Lane. The Deerfield Park District will offi-
cially host this event.
Still in its planning stages, the Sociable will include "speechify-
ings", performing and participating in square dancing, musical entertainment, games, refreshments,
and "notables". It's expected that (weather permitting) Indian Clark (Warren Fremling) will lead
a mini -parade, with covered wagon and fellow pioneers marching from the Village Hall, through the
Commons, to the Community Center - to proclaim the day and the rest of the year. The pioneer
trail will offer special surprises for Villagers along the route.
Children will get special attention'at the Sociable. If the Library can complete a needed port-
able puppet stage in time, there'll be a puppet show, as well as other entertainment and games.
The Story Teller, settled in her rocker, will add to the pioneer quality of the day.
As a media event, the Communications Committee has been named responsible for the kick-off
Sociable. Rosemary Sazonoff and Brenda Segal.,_co-directors this divisional committee, are be-
ing assisted by Rep. William Peterson and his Administrative Aide, Jan Zobus; Sherry Kalan•(of
Baxter -Travenol), Chamber of Commerce President; Mary Barber, Baxter -Travenol; Ernie King, artist;
Linda Coleman, #109 Teacher; Wessley Stryker and Joe Hoffman, long-time residents; Joanne Kanter,
Lerner -Life Newspapers; Jan Lewis, Pioneer Press; and Carol Owens, News -Voice.
Fittingly, LARRY DONDANVILLE, great grandson of Deerfield's first President - John Ender - is
Chairman of the Steering Committee (executive committee), with John Post as Vice Chairman. Rita
Benson has been named Secretary.
Village Trustee Bob York, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce,'is Director of Events,
with Col. (ret.) Franklin Werner in charge of special events; Chuck Caruso, Superintendent of Dis-
trict #109, heads school events; and Rabbi Reuven Frankel, Congregation B'nai Tikvah, church isevents.
Coralee Schwartz, President of the Deerfield Historical Society, is Director of the Historical
Committee, with Pearl Schessler as co -Director. Joan Forrest and George Marty are co -Directors
of the Finance Committee. Joe Dicello, of the First National Bank, is the Sesquicentennial Trea-
surer.
Other Committee members, appointed by Mayor Bernard Forrest and assigned to various committees
are: Drew Tibbetts, Ted Repsholdt, Karl Berning, Harry Pitner, Jane Rudolph, Robert Gand and
Donald Morrison - on the Events Committee. Marolyn Allsbrow, Naomi Clampitt, Chief Jack Gagne,
Jack Hicks, John Willman, Bea Meyer and Bob McClarren - on the Historical Committee. Howard Wolf,
Trustee Vern Swanson, Larry Dondanville, John Post, Joe Dicello and Dr. Ed Szyman - on the Finance
Committee.
Chairman Dondanville says the Committee hopes to involve the entire community in the year -long
festivities, as sponsors and/or participants. Residents are asked for ideas to spruce up the
Village for the year and, in particular, for the Fourth of July week -end. "One of our ideas is
to have that time a homecoming week -end for the Family'Day Sesquicentennial celebration. We
want the Garden Clubs, as well as the people who just do their own thing, to help beautify our
community. A spruce up contest is being considered."
A listing will soon be available with all the year's activities which the Committee expects will
be hosted by various organizations and Village governmental bodies.
The Committee welcomes any.suggestions from the public on ways to honor the founding of Deerfield.
Any communications may be addressed to the Sesquicentennial'Committee,:850 Waukegan Road. .
Jim Piety, great grandson (fifth generation) of Daniel Wright, first white settler in the area,
has been invited to the kick-off "Sociable". Piety, a college professor, has been writing a
book about his famous forebear. Piety is one of the notables who will be present on March 17th,
with a little talk and slide show about Daniel Wright.
FLOODING UPDATE
WE REALLY PUT OUR FOOT IN IT!
Our engineering consultants have filed their
final report on sanitary sewer improvements.
Qoe Flood Advisory Committee and the Village
ard are considering recommendations from
the consultant and the means of financing
them.
Efforts continue to gain Congressional ap-
proval for the North Branch Floodwater Man-
agement Plan that involves major retention
basins in this area..
It's time for all of us to write to both of
our Senators and Congressman Porter, request-
ing their support. We need your help ... the
more letters, the greater our chances! We've
written a sample letter, but feel free to add
your own thoughts to it!
Subsequent issues of D-TALES will more speci-
fically highlight our plans for improvements
to resolve local flooding problems.

Dear
Once again, we are approaching the Spring
season and the potential for flooding prob-
lems in certain areas of our community.
For the past several years, our Village of
ficials have been looking toward implement-
ing the North Branch Floodwater Management
Plan. The most important improvement for .
the Village of Deerfield is the construction,
of the proposed retention basin (Structure
#27) at Duffy Lane and the Tollway. We en-
courage you, as our elected representative,
to give this matter your highest priority -
and we look forward to your cooperation in
seeking Federal approval of this project.
Sincerely,
41(Because we know you're busy and this might
get lost in the shuffle, we've duplicated
this letter. You can pick copies up at the
Village Hall, if you like, and all you need
to do is sign your name and address an en-
velope.)
In the last issue of D-TALES, we mentioned
new businesses... but we forgot one!
