Vol. 3, No. 2 - Sep 1982KISSING ZONE September, 1982 Vol. 3, No.2 WATCH FOR THE MAIL IN EARLY NOVEMBER! ! ! The computer is working away on the forms for vehicle and dog licenses for 1983..... we'll be sending those forms.to you during the first week of November'. This year, why not send them back by -return mail and have it over with? ALL vehicles must have stickers displayed on or before January 1, 1983. That includes your moped, your'RV, your expensive sports car which you only use on dry, sunny days in the summer time ...... in short, every vehicle! If your kids are away at college but will be here during the year and their cars are registered in Deerfield, they need stickers, too. If you have any doubt, call us and we'll answer your questions before January 1st. If you fail to purchase and display the sticker by January 1st, you will be charged an additional 50% for the sticker, and you'll probably get a ticket for another $25.00. That would make your $25.00 sticker end up costing you $62.50... a needless expenditure • of $37.50. DOGS must be licensed by January 1st, also, no matter when your rabies inoculation is due. Everyone has a valid rabies inoculation on January 1st, although some shots are good for one year and some for three years. The fee for your dog license is $5.00 and you must show us proof of rabies in order to get the license. If you mail the proof with your check and completed form, we'll send it all back to you with the license. CATS must have a rabies inoculation but do not need a Village license. All dogs and cats have to have the Lake County rabies tag. These are $1.00 a year and can be pur- chased at the Village Hall or you can mail the forms to the Lake County Health Depart- ment with your check. Dogs get a total of three tags - the veterinarian's, ours and Lake County's - cats only get two. Every year, we talk to hundreds of residents who _say they didn't know about stickers and licenses ....... and every year we devote the first page of D-TALES to explaining al.l about them. Of course, this doesn't apply to you, but you might want to remind your neighbor about the penalty for putting this off until after the first of the year! WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR COMPUTERIZED FORMS, that's the time to send them back with your check. The forms will show the information for. your 1982 cars and/or dogs. If there are any changes, make those changes in the shaded area of the form - otherwise, all you need do is get it back to us. • YOU'RE INVITED.... The Deerfield Fire Department is having an Open House on Sunday, October 3rd, to kick off Fire Prevention Week. Tours, demonstrations and exhibits will start at 11:00 A.M. The Corps expects to finish tfi eir-study ih late Spring;'1983:" It'must-then' go to Washington for review by.several agencies and Congress. It will take considerable time and effort for this flood control project to become a reality. As more details become available, we will inform you as to how you might help gain Congressional support for the project. CREEK MAINTENANCE: The Union Drainage District hopes soon to resolve litigation that has prevented cleaning and general maintenance of the creek. The District is also seeking help from the Corps of Engineers in this mainten- ance project, which is tentatively scheduled for next Spring. We'll keep you informed of any developments as the Mayor and Board of Trustees continue to • work toward the implementation of the North Branch Floodwater Management Plan.. BRICKYARDS DEVELOPMENT In August, the Mayor and Board of Trustees approved final plans for commercial and in- dustrial development on the Brickyard property, located north of Lake -Cook Road and west of the railroad tracks. The majority of this property is a former landfill site which was phased out in the late 1960's. Due to the unique features of the land, the Village agreed to work with the developer, Sven .Flodstrom (a resident and local businessman), in developing the property. Plans approved in August include two restaurants and one 130,500 square foot office building. Previously, the Plan Commission approved a preliminary plan for 432 condominium units. It now has under consideration a modification of that plan which proposes that a portion of the residential be developed as a Permanent Life Care Facility, a relatively new concept design- ed to serve the needs of the elderly. In 1975, the Village acquired 79 acres of land in the Brickyards. In cooperation with the State Division of Water Resources, approximately one-half of this property was set aside for a water retention basin, with the balance to be used for public recreation. The Village intends to trade some of its land with Mr. Flodstrom in order to facilitate his planned unit development. However, the land set aside for the retention basin will continue to be reserved for that purpose. When the entire project is completed, approximately 35 acres of the property will be available for public recreational use. • The Brickyard property has been the subject of discussion in the Village for over 35 years. Now, finally, we are moving toward its development: Remember, there will be no scavenger service Halloween will be officially observed this November 25, December 25 or January 1st. year on Sunday, October 31st. WHEN WILL WE HAVE CABLE TV? NICOM continues to make good progress in inging Cable TV to Deerfield. Several crews are working thru- out the Village ® with plans to wire all of = the com- munity by the end of 1982. Once the basic cable is installed, OMNICOM representatives will call on each homeowner to ask for subscriptions to the service. Residents who subscribe within 30 days after the service is available will not be charged for installation. Fees vary according to the number and type of features chosen. A total - of 52 channels will be available when the system is completed. You may be sure that OMNICOM will contact you as the service becomes available in your area but, if you have any questions concerning it, call them directly at 831-5900. SAFETY COUNCIL There are seven members on the Safety Council nd they meet regularly on the second Monday each month. This group reviews and recom- ends to the Mayor and Board on any and all matters relating to public safety. Gene Berkowitz is the Chairman of the Council The other members presently serving are: G. G. Christenson Herbert C. Sundmacher Jeffrey L. Picklin Mrs. Sheila Stanger As you can see, we are in need of volunteers to serve on the Safety Council. ARTS AND RIVERWOODS The 23rd Annual House Walk and Invitational Art Show will be held in Riverwoods on Octo- ber 2nd and 3rd. I When y.ou see our personnel in blue shirts with this emblem on the left hand side, you're ' oFo looking at one of the most important tax saving devices in your life. Our Public Works people have completed SIX YEARS with no time off due to accidents on the job. Now, when you consider the work they do, you'll under- stand how remarkable that record 'is ... and it's unique to Deerfield. As of August 10, 1982, that's about 385,000 working hours. Probably more impressive to you - the taxpayer - this safety record saves over $30,000 each year in Workers_' Compensation Insurance. Once again. this year, the Mayor and Board of Trustees hosted a celebration dinner for all members of the Department to express everyone's con- gratulations and appreciation. CALLING ALL GARDENERS... We'll be signing you up for next year's plots in both the HOE! HOE! HOE! and the SOUTHERN PLANTATION after November. There will be a lot of room in the new garden location next year so save your seed catalogues! Come in and see us for information after the end of November. THAT COVERS IT... We need a little wild ginger, vinca minor or Baltic ivy. If you can help, call us. This is for the triangle at Hazel and Journal Court. WE'LL DO SOME OF YOUR VACUUMING FOR YOU THIS FALL We're going to come around and pick up the leaves you have left over after you bag as many as possible - but we'll only make one pass down your street.. Any leaves that you put in bags can be put at the curb for the scavenger on your regular pick-up days -.in unlimited quantities.. We urge you.to use this method of disposing of leaves since it is all part of the service for which you are already paying. The map below is divided into five sections, with a date on each section. We won't be in your neighborhood before the date shown but we might be a day or two later. So put the leaves on your parkway (NOT IN THE STREET) just before the date shown. If you miss us, you'll have to wait another year. In order to make this a successful program, we need three elements: your cooperation, falling leaves before the time we get to your area, and the weather (we'll only be able to pick up leaves until it snows - after that, we are stopped). We'll do our part and we know you'll doyours!
