'During the first part of NOVEMBER, you'll be recei.ving your dog and -vehicle license applications in the mail. One of the smartest moves you'll ever make will be to sit down right away, make any changes necessary on the form and send it back to us with your check in the correct amount! ,E.5,0 ,J:T= 1.Ti 1-71 :...: ALL vehicle stickers must be displayed on or before January 1, 1982. All means mopeds, motorcycles, trucks, college students' cars ... every vehicle which is registered in Deer- field. You do not have to have your new State license before you get your stickers. If you fail to purchase and display the sticker by January 1st, you will be charged an ad- ditional 50% for the sticker, and you will probably be subject to a $25.00 fine. This •means that the $25.00 car sticker will cost $37.50 plus $25.00 for the fine - or a total of $62.50. DOGS must also be licensed by January 1st, regardless of when the rabies inoculation is dated. Everyone has a valid rabies inoculation on January 1st because the inoculation is good for one or three full years, depending on your Veterinarian., The fee for the dog license is $5.00. CATS must have rabies inoculations but are not required to have a Village license. All dogs and cats MUST have a Lake County rabies tags. They are $1.00 per year - and we have them available at the Village Hall for your convenience, or you can mail the forms to the Lake County Health Department with your check and they will send you the tag by return mail. Dogs end up with three tags, cats with two. DON'T put those forms away; you must use them this year. The computer print out will show the information from your last year's applications. If there are any changes, please make them in the shaded area of the form AND SEND IT TO US IMMEDIATELY. You may also drop them into the depository on the side of the building. If you wonder why we are making this our front page item in this issue of D-Tales, you should know that in 1980 THREE HUNDRED AND NINETY-SEVEN tickets were issued for late purchase of vehicle stickers! We don't want that to happen to YOU. ...................... WHAT'S THE LATEST ON CABLE TV? •With minor exceptions, the introduction of Cable TV in Deerfield is on schedule. Our franchisee, OMNICOM Cablevision of Illinois, is currently working with Illinois Bell Telephone and Commonwealth Edison on plans to rearrange their facilities to make room for the cable. This will be above -ground where the wires are presently overhead, and underground in subdivisions with underground wiring. OMNICOM hopes to complete the con- struction phase of their work in time to begin servicing Deerfield residents next summer. YOUR CHARIOT AWAITS ..... BEAUTIFUL SARA LEE We have replaced the Dial -A -Ride bus service with a subsi.di.zed cab service limited only to Senior Citizens and/or handicapped residents. The lack of ridership on the Dial -A -Ride re suited in costs of approximately $6.00 for a one-way trip .... far in excess of a cost ac- ceptable to the Village Board. Criteria for using the new cab service are: - Deerfield residents only, 65 and over or certified by a physician as per- manently handicapped. We will add our identification to the RTA pass for Seniors or we'll issue Deerfield passes to qualified handicapped residents. AMERICAN TAXI will provide the service. Call 945-9444 at any time, giving them at least 30 minutes notice. You must make arrangements by calling the company.... they will not take walk-ons. You will need to present your iden- tification to the driver and sign his log. It will cost you 50t each way within the Village boundaries. Outside the Village, you'll pay 50t plus 10c for each tenth of a mile. RTA passes are available at the Township Hall. Deerfield identification and/or handicapped identification are available at the Village Hall. We'll be glad to answer any question you may have --- 945-5000. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK - OCTOBER 7th Chief Jack Gagne thinks every week should be dedicated to preventing fires, and we agree. Home safety surveys are a free service of the Fire Department.... sign up at the Village Hall or the Fire Station or.call them at_945-4066. You should have smoke detectors for early warning of a fire. You're advised to set a special day (i.e., your birthday, a holiday, an anniversary) when you change the batteries every year. When did you have your furnace checked? Does your chimney need tuckpointing? When the snow piles up, do you shovel out the fire hydrant? Who's going to feel the worst if your house catches on fire? Mayor Forrest and the Board of Trustees paid •. tribute to the Kitchens of Sara Lee in re- cognition of their contribution to the beauty of the Village. Two bronze plaques were pre- sented to Sara Lee - one of which we hope will be affixed to one of the planters in front of the building and the other somewhere inside the offices. ONE DEERFIELD PLACE ..... A metropolitan area wide strike by Operating Engineers, Local 150, idled construction and delayed occupancy at One Deerfield Place, our new Senior housing project. The occupancy date of September 15th will have to be revised, of cour-se-,- as -there 4 s st i l L-about-- six. weeks'- of - work remaining. On July 13th, a lottery was conducted at the Village Hall to establish an order for the processing of interested tenants. About 300 preliminary applications had been submitted at that time. Interviews were started shortly thereafter, and are proceeding on schedule. Final selections and notification of tenants will be made so that move -ins can be made smoothly upon completion of the building. One Deerfield Place, a five story, 98 unit apartment building for the elderly and handi- capped, is being developed by the Deerfield Senior Housing Corporation, sponsored by the Christ United Methodist Church. This is a non-profit development and is'being financed through a direct loan by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. BICYCLE SAFETY PROGRAM The Bicycle Safety Patrol issued 1,663 warning tickets during the three summer months. Of those, 65 were for appearances before the Bi- cycle Safety Compliance Board. Three traffic citations were issued. We hope this program has had a lasting effect on bike riders and that good bike riding habits will become second nature. As we've said before, when a car and a bike collide, it's usually the bicycle rider who suffers. NOVEMBER 3rd is election day for School Districts #109 and #113 and for the Community College. If you're not registered, be sure to do so before October 5th. You may vote absentee in person at the Village Hall, Township Hall or the County Clerk's office in Waukegan, until November 2nd. OR, you may vote absentee by mail until October 29th. Polls will be open from 6:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. This is an important election for your children .... don't forget to vote! • FROM OUR BRANCH OFFICE ... TUESDAYS & FRIDAYS... AFTER SUNDOWN Do you have trouble walking or riding your bike •on the sidewalks because the trees or bushes at- tack you? Or could you be the owner of some of these offenders? Either way, this is the time to cut them back. In consideration of people who use the sidewalks, we ask that you check to make sure your plantings aren't obstructing the walks. Getting hit in the face by a wet branch is not one of life's more pleasant happenings!! Be a good neighbor..... cut them back! PUBLIC WORKS DOES IT AGAIN! Last August loth was the first day of the sixth consecutive year for Public Works personnel's fantastic safety record. There are 28 people in this Department, and .. they have had NO time off due to accidents on the job. We doubt that the record can . © ' be matched by any- one, anywhere! The Mayor and Board of Trustees acknow- .;. ledged this re- cord at the fifth Q annual safety din- ner on September 12th. Putting this accomplish- ment into taxpayers' language, the savings in Workers' Compensation amounts to approximately $30,000 annually. .............. ... MANPOWER COMMISSION There are five members on the Manpower Commis- sion, and they serve for three year terms. It is the function of the Commission to interview residents who volunteer to serve on our various advisory boards, and then make their recommen- dations to the Mayor and Board, based on the qualifications of the applicants. Russell Ferris is the Chairman of the Manpower Commission. The other members are: William R. Brown Mrs. Sharon Schwalbach Mrs. Jean Reuther Mrs. Edna Schneider The Manpower Commission is always looking for people who would like to serve on one of the Boards, Commissions or Councils. If you are interested, call the Village Hall and we will send you the necessary application form. 50/50 TREE PROGRAM • We'll be planting 90 new parkway trees this Fall, under the 50/50 program. The Crimson King maple is the most popular choice this ,year, with the ginkgo running a close second. If you want to be on the list for next year, drop us a line, That's the answer .... and here's the question - WHEN CAN I PUT STUFF AT THE CURB FOR PICK UP BY THE SCAVENGER? Deerfield is such a pretty community and we all want to keep it that way. You can help if you will refrain from putting things at the curb too early. We have been issuing warning tickets to repeat offenders and, when necessary, re- gular citations. We get complaints from residents in every area of the Village, so we know it's a source of irritation ....... and besides, it looks tacky! ........................ AND, FURTHERMORE ... After we mailed the_.l,ast issue of D-Tales, we had a few calls - and even some compliments! We've been asked to relay a few suggestions to you from your next door neighbor.... - PLEASE get rid of that junk car! - Do you realize that your house needs a coat of paint? - How about closing your garage doors when you're going to be away? Keep your pets in your own yard, please! Naturally, none of these suggestions applies to you but we're passing them along, as re- quested. If you have a helpful hint (sometimes known as a gripe), we'll try to include it in a future issue. HOE! HOE! HOE! Our Hoe! Hoe!.Hoe! garden project.was written up in several trade papers, and we actually received some inquiries about it ..... one of which came from Fremantle, Western Australia! All of the Hoers were invited to attend the Board meeting on September 21st, when they presented a sample of their produce to Mr. Irl Marshall, Sr., to express their appreciation for his generosity in letting us use his land. This was a great project. Many of the Hoers have told us how productive their gardens were and, as an added bonus, it was an opportunity to meet some new people. All in all, it was a huge success. Next ti.me somebody asks you: ''How many miles of water mains are there in Deerfield?'', you may be the only one who knows -that the answer is 75 miles. WE THOUGHT WE'D "LEAF" THE BEST UNTIL LAST! ! ! The Mayor and Board of Trustees have decided to provide leaf pick-up this Fall, but on a smaller scale than in past years. Consult the map below for the date that we will -be in your area. We won't be in your neighborhood before the date shown - but we might be a day or two later. Rake your leaves out to the parkway... ABSOLUTELY DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE STREET! Not only is that a grave danger to children who play in the leaf piles, but it can cause severe sewer problems, not to mention the fact that you will get a ticket for ordinance violation! Remember, you can bag all of the leaves, put them on your parkway, and the scavenger will remove them. We strongly urge you to do this since it's already part of the ser- vice for which you are paying. When we come through your area with the leaf vacuum, we will make only ONE trip down your street. We won't be back. Now we have to hope that the leaves fall at the right time --- and let's hope we get them picked up before the snow flies. Once it snows, we can't pick up leaves. So if you and the leaves and the weather all cooperate, we think this will be a successful program. `,.
