Open House September 18
The Deerfield Fine Arts Commission will
host a community open house on Thursday,

selected for the inaugural year of the
Deerfield Public Art Program before they are
put on display throughout the Village.
The event will be held in the Deerfield Public
Library, 920 Waukegan Road, from 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. on September 18, and will feature
many of the artists who created this year’s
pieces. Light refreshments will be served.
Multiple media are featured in this year’s
collection, including sculpture, fabric art,
mixed media, photography, water color and
oil paintings. The Fine Arts Commission
selected this year’s pieces from submissions
from a very talented pool of artists.
Artists from Deerfield include Ruth Hecht,

Wagner, Kathleen Warren and Susan Willis.
Other artists include Charlotte Kaplan of
Wilmette, Anna Khadine of Libertyville,

Park, and Michael Zidman of Lincolnshire.
The primary goal of the Deerfield Public
Art Program is to publicly display works of
art created by local, regional, national and
international artists in public spaces. The
art will be displayed for one year in public
buildings. The program will select new pieces
each year for the selected locations.
Buildings included in the program are
Deerfield Village Hall, Public Works,
Deerfield Public Library, Deerfield Park
District facilities and the West Deerfield

The ‘Pumpkin Invasion’
Returns October 11
The pumpkins are invading Deerfield again!
The Village of Deerfield, DBR Chamber
of Commerce, The Shops at Deerfield
Square and the Deerfield Park District have
partnered to bring back “The Invasion of
the Pumpkins” for charity. This year, the
event comes with a twist – the Pack the Park
Challenge.
The Shops at Deerfield Square, in
conjunction with CRM Properties, will
donate $2 per person - up to $10,000 for
5,000 attendees - at the “Brats & Blues”
concert on Saturday, October 11, 2014. The
concert, featuring Shirley King, daughter of
blues legend B.B. King, and the band Blue
Road, will take place at 6 p.m. in Jewett Park.
The money will be divided among the
charities that have the greatest audience
support at the live concert. All money
donated in the giant pumpkins that will be
placed around downtown Deerfield will also
go to the registered charities.
Charities are required to preregister to
participate. Residents are challenged to
come Pack the Park to show their support
and increase the donation.

Residential Water
Conservation
The Village of Deerfield’s Sustainability
Commission wants to help residents con-
serve water. A simple way to save money
and conserve water is to check for leaking
toilets in your home.
If your toilet has a leak, you could be wast-
ing about 200 gallons (or approximately
$2.00) of water every day. That would be
equivalent to flushing your toilet more than
50 times for no reason.
Try this simple experiment to check for
leaking toilets. First, place a few drops of
food coloring in the toilet tank. Then, wait
15 minutes; if the color shows up in the
bowl without flushing, you have a leak!
Make sure to flush immediately after this
experiment to avoid staining the tank.
If your toilet is leaking, the cause is often an
old or faulty toilet flapper, a relatively easy,
inexpensive do-it-yourself project that pays
for itself in no time. For those unable to
complete do-it-yourself projects, the Sus-
tainability Commission has partnered with
local area plumbers to provide residents
with a standardized dye-testing of their
home’s toilets.
All participating plumbers have agreed
to provide a standardized dye-testing of
your home’s toilets for the quoted price of
dye-testing up to 4 toilets at $79.00, and
dye-testing 5 or more toilets at $99.00.
Participating plumbers include BMW
Plumbing, 847.948.8484, 440 Lake Cook
Road, Deerfield, www.bmwplumbing.
net; Pasquesi Plumbing, 847.433.3426,
3218 Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park,
www.pasquesiplumbing.com; and Ravinia
Plumbing, 847.432.5561, 1580 Old Skokie
Road, Highland Park, www.raviniaplumb-
ing.com
Interested residents should contact partici-
pating plumbers directly. After the plumber
has identified any potential leaks, residents
may choose any plumber they like to repair
their toilet.
For more information, contact Andrew Lich-
terman, Assistant to the Village Manager at
847.719.7403. e
Ash Trees on Private
Property
Property owners are urged to monitor their
ash trees for the Emerald Ash Borer.
No private tree inventory currently
exists, and ash tree density varies by
neighborhood. Please note, tree removal
requires a permit from the Village and fees
are waived for diseased trees.
The decision to treat, remove or retain
private trees rests with the property owner.
Property owners should be aware of the
risks associated with keeping dead ash trees
on their property. Ash trees can become
brittle and may lose large limbs in storms.
The Village encourages property owners to
remove hazardous trees from their property.
If a tree is hazardous to the Village right-of-
way, the Village may require the property
owners to have the tree removed for safety
reasons. The Village also encourages
residents to replace trees lost from removal.

Back To School Safety
The following traffic safety tips from the
Deerfield Police Department will help keep
you and our children safe this school year.
All passengers should wear a seat belt and/
or an age- and size-appropriate car safety
seat or booster seat.
Do not text or talk on your cell phone while
driving.
Slow down and obey all traffic laws and
speed limits.
Be alert for school zones that have a
reduced speed limit at designated times of
the day.
Watch for school buses. Red flashing lights
and an extended stop arm indicate the
school bus is stopping to load or unload
children. State law requires you to stop.
Keep an eye out for children walking in
the street, especially where there are no
sidewalks.
Be alert for children playing and gathering
near bus stops and for those who may dart
into the street without looking for traffic.
When backing out of a driveway or leaving
a garage, watch for children walking or bik-
ing to school.
When driving in neighborhoods or school
zones, watch for young people who may
be in a hurry to get to their destination and
may not be thinking about getting there
safely.

Police Department at 847.945.8636 e

than 90 tons!
The Deerfield Police are working to raise at
least $1,000 to participate. Donations are
encouraged for this great cause.
The 2013 event was a record-breaking
success, as 64 teams participated and more
than $135,000 was raised for the athletes of
the Illinois Special Olympics. Please help us
to make this year an even greater success!

Fall Leaf Collection
The Village’s annual
leaf collection program
provides residents
with an alternative for
disposal of their autumn leaves. Residents
who do not mulch or bag their leaves may
simply rake leaves to the curb or carriage
walk line the night before their scheduled
pickup. Beginning the week of October
27 and continuing through November 21,
Public Works Department crews will make
one pass by each house in the Village every
week during the 4-week program.
Here are some reminders for leaf pickup:
• Do not park on the street the day of
your pickup.
• Do not rake grass clippings, sticks,
rocks, branches or mud to the curb with
your leaves.
• Try to put leaves out each week, if
possible.
• Inclement weather may delay pickups,
but crews will make at least four trips
through your neighborhood.

Department at 847.317.7245 e
Flood Information:
Installment 3 of 3:
Natural & Beneficial
Functions
Floodplains play a valuable role in pro-
viding natural and beneficial functions
to Deerfield and the surrounding area.
Floodplains that are relatively undisturbed
provide a wide range of benefits to both
human and natural systems. These ben-
efits provide aesthetic pleasure as well as
function to provide active processes such
as filtering nutrients.
Parts of both the Middle and West Fork
of the North Branch of the Chicago River
floodplain are used as a means to filter
chemical run-off so that these areas can
maintain bio-diversity and ecosystem
sustainability.
Both floodplains contain historic and ar-
cheological sites that provide opportunity
for education and study. They enhance
waterfowl, fish and other wildlife habitats
and provide feeding/breeding grounds.
And lastly, both floodplains provide
natural erosion control and open space so
further flooding damage does not occur.
Drainage System
Maintenance
As simple as it may sound, simply keeping
smaller ditches and streams free of debris
can dramatically improve the run-off ca-
pacity of low-lying areas, as well as greatly
reduce incidental blockage that signifi-
cantly contributes to flooding.
Please note that it is illegal to dump
materials into a required waterway and
violators may be fined. If you see some-
one in the act of dumping or see debris in
one of our watercourses, please contact
the Village Engineering Department at
847.317.2490.

Township office is serving more individuals
and more families than ever before.
Please consider donating non-perishable
food items, personal care or household
cleaning products. Whether it is a box of
pasta, a bottle of glass cleaner, a can of fruit,
or shampoo, your donations all will go to
fellow township residents who are strug-
gling to provide some basic items for their
household.
Contributions of gift cards to local gro-
cery stores and checks payable to the West
Deerfield Township Food pantry are also
graciously accepted.
The West Deerfield Township Food Pantry
is a 501 (c) 3 organization, so your contri-
bution is tax-deductible.
Your generosity will help someone that will
greatly appreciate a neighbor’s help.
The pantry, located at 601 Deerfield Road,
operates five days a week from 8:30 a.m. -
4:30 p.m. For more information, contact West
Deerfield Township at 847.945.0614. e

Volunteer Commission,
Board Members Wanted
The Village of Deerfield is seeking enthusi-
astic and motivated residents to volunteer
on Village boards and commissions. This
rewarding experience provides residents
the opportunity to serve directly alongside
their neighbors and impact Village matters.
There are 18 boards and commissions ap-
pointed to assist the Village Board in policy-
making decisions. While most operate at
the sole discretion of the Village Board,
some have specific duties and obligations
established by state law.
The overall communication process
between the village and its residents is
enhanced through the voluntary service of
more than 100 citizens who serve as advi-
sors to the Mayor and Board of Trustees.
All positions on these boards are non-
salaried.
The commissions vary in their areas of
concern from the Fine Arts Commission
and Family Days Commission, to the Board
of Zoning Appeals and Cemetery Commis-
sion.
Residents interested in serving on a board
or commission are encouraged to fill out a
Manpower Application and return it to the
Village Manager’s Office
These applications are held until a vacancy
opens and applicants are brought in to meet
with the Manpower Commission for an
interview.
Come join the hometown team!

Drop it and Drive: Don’t Text Behind the Wheel
It is illegal to use an electronic communication device while driving. An “electronic
communication device” means an electronic device; including but not limited to a wire-
less telephone, personal digital assistant, portable or mobile computer. Cell phones and
electronic devices are permitted only if using a hands-free device or Bluetooth technol-
ogy. Talking on a cell phone in speaker phone mode while holding the phone in your
hand is not considered “hands-free.”
Illinois also has a statewide ban on driving while electronic messaging. An “electronic
message” is defined as a self-contained piece of digital communication transmitted
between physical devices. This includes but is not limited to e-mail, a text message, an
instant message, a photograph, a video, or a command or request to access an Internet
site.
The Deerfield Police Department reminds drivers to give their full attention to the road
and promote a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians. e
Dogs Are Required To Be Leashed
All dogs in the Village are required to be leashed. No owner or any person entitled
to the custody of any dog shall permit the dog to be at large or to confine the dog in a
manner so that it can escape and be at large, unless the dog is securely confined upon a
leash of sufficient strength not more than three feet (3’) and accompanied by any able
bodied person capable of controlling the actions of the dog under any circumstance.
Any person, firm or corporation in violation of the leash ordinance shall be fined not
less than $10.00 for the first such offense; and shall not be fined less than $25.00 for the
second such offense; and shall be fined not less than $50.00 for the third offense and all
subsequent offenses within a one year period.
Remember to pick up after your pets and properly dispose of animal waste. Be courte-
ous to your neighbors and only dispose of animal waste in your own garbage receptacle.
For more information, please view the Deerfield Municipal Code at www.deerfield.il.us e
